Are you using Grandstream HT-286? Customer support asked me to do a factory reset after trying all the methods and it worked. May be you can ask customer support to go through it with you. Excellent service. Quick follow-up. At the end, we did a factory reset and re-configured the adapter. It is 100% functional again.

Plus with an oversea number, they can just use any phone to call. One more thing, I don't need to provide remote technical assistance

Not bad an idea.. but not cheap...

You may consider offering overseas number, i.e. to link the fpl number to a number in other country so our friends/family oversea can call that number (free for them) and reach us directly. I am paying CAD 40 a year for a number (just for incoming) in Hong Kong. You can also generate income from LD....

At the end I DMZed the ATA. I believe the previous version of my router has the same option as yours but they removed them in version 2.

I am going to cancel my Rogers Home Phone to save $30+ a month.

I set up like this and tried both protocol UDP and TCP. Still the other side could not hear. I can hear the other end tough. Can you look the screen shots of my router in this link to see if I need to configure other options?

I have just purchased a HT-286 and am getting one-way communication. I have set up the following in my TEW-652BRP router and it doesn't help. Have I got it right?
