Need DSL filter for VOIP phone?

Post by JimmyNeutron »

I have Bell DSLinternet and always have the DSL filter connected for the home phones. Now I have ported the Bell landline to Fongo, but I still use Bell DSL internet. Question is: Do I still need the DSL filter for the VOIP phones??

Thanks. But does it matter if I use it anyway? Is it better, worse or no difference?

no difference as you are now using the INTERNET for your telephone ... before, the DSL was sharing the same wire with your phone, and to reduce potential interference between the two is why you needed the filter ... your phone service is now VIA the internet, so the filter is superfluous.

As far as I know the filter is a low pass filter to remove interference as TheHardy says (some older systems may have used high pass filter as well to the DSL). I do not have filters now as I removed them all soon after I gave up the landline phone, however, the phones now work just as well with the filter as without.

The filters won't hurt anything -- as a matter of fact, they won't DO anything ... other than take up space and be yet another connection that could potentially fail.
