texting to phones - non-fongo or otherwise
I am trying to figure out whether I want to pay for Fongo to get unlimited Texting.
I want a texting feautre (canadian number) that enables me to give out the number so I can text and read text unlimited.
In a nutshell:
1) Canadian number
2) unlimited texting
3) no charges for anything once I pay for the year (or by month)
Any suggestions?

Download and run the Fongo client. Incoming texts are free, to give you an idea what you are in for. Nice feature is if you have a phone plan with free incoming texts, you can set the fongo client to forward text to your phone, so you do not need the Fongo client on all the time.
Snd yeah, there are no other costs after you pay the month or semi annual fee.

I dont have a phone plan but instead use Wifi. I was hoping to use the Fongo number for texting, paying the $2.99 per month for unlimited texting (receive and send).

Then you have no need for forwarding texts! Fongo by wifi is a great idea! In any case, if you did not do so already, download the Fongo client and play with it. If you are happy with it, then pay for the texting add on. I can not think of any nasty surprises that you will encounter.
Re: texting to phones - non-fongo or otherwise
Using just wifi is perfectly fine. In fact we have Fongo on my daughters iPod so she can text her friends, and that certainly doesn't have a phone plan on it.
The app is free, and receiving text messages is free, so it will cost you nothing to try out (receiving anyway). @ $1.99 for unlimited Canadian text messages for a month it probably won't break the bank to test outgoing also. There are no contracts or cancellation fees to worry about and when you are happy it works then $9.99 for 6 months free texting is pretty hard to beat.
There are some ads on the app (you can pay to remove them), but you don't have to gain credits to keep using the app buy having ads forced on you.
Fongo to Fongo texts are always free (sending and receiving) so if you have two devices you can test on that.

Don't mean to hi-Jack a thread. but how do you setup fongo to forward the texts? I don't see that option anywhere.
Re: texting to phones - non-fongo or otherwise
Bridonca, would you be able to confirm how to forward messages?

It is one of the settings on the Fongo client, at least with Android, might not be on the iPhone.

I did not find this option in the fongo client for android. Can you please explain the procedure or take a screenshot of the option to forward SMS to the phone.bridonca wrote: Nice feature is if you have a phone plan with free incoming texts, you can set the fongo client to forward text to your phone

I had to check to make sure. There seems to be 2 settings menus. When in the Fongo dial pad menu, click on the icon with 3 lines on the to left. Click on account, and then settings. In the integration menu, check mark receive cellular SMS. That should do it.

This option is for receiving your regular cellular SMS into your fongo client.bridonca wrote:check mark receive cellular SMS.
