Disconnecting Original Bell Landline

Hi All,

I am moving into a new place and have already purchased number porting and config file.
I've tested my ATA with the given number, now waiting for the porting to be completed.

I am researching on how to connect my house phone wiring to use the voip line.

I've seen tutorials online that involves me disconnecting actual wiring from the NID, but in my home, I notice that the wires in the NID goes into my house and connects to a jack called "Verification / Demarcation" From that jack, it looks like the phone line goes on to the rest of the house.

I am wondering if I can just simply unplug the jack in the "Verification / Demarcation" and will this disconnect my house wiring with Bell's live line so I can safely plug in my ATA?

Yes, you can simply unplug the jack in the "Verification / Demarcation" and that will disconnect your house wiring from Bell's live line.

I did one step further though. Inside my house, I cut the phone line that was from the demarc to make sure that even if a prick reconnects the phone jack in the Bell service box, my phone wiring inside the house will not be affected. Do this at your own risk.

Just keep in mind that if you have DSL, then you still need the incoming phone line for the modem so you might need to get a little creative with how things are plugged in.

I'll be using cable so that's no problem, and I'll tape up the demarc jack real well so we don't accidentally plug anything in.

Red permanent marker with $$$ written on it also works ... no need to go total overkill just in case you do have to go back to some form of POTS at some time...

Remember that in the case of power failure it is good to have some form of power backup so that your voip/cordless phones still work. A cell phone is OK as long as you (a) can find it and (b) the battery in not about to die!

Very valid point ... and if someone is considering going purely VOIP, a UPS is a great idea, so long as you get one that has enough capacity.

Of course, the cause of the power failure needs to be considered too -- if trees have fallen across lines (or similar) then the internet (either DSL or Cable) may be down too ... or if you are wireless, towers/cell sites may be damaged, or after prolonged outage, THEIR UPS may be dry too, before the crews can get gennies out to them. That is the pitfall of cell providers such as wind and mobilicity -- the big 4 have tech crews and gennies (and even portable pocket cells) that they can deploy in case of outage.

I use solar panels connected to a fairly large car battery. It can keep the internet and some lighting going for at least a day and if the sun shines for even longer. The modem/ router consumes most power and the phone almost nothing.

Expensive PSTN/POTS for residential use , in a generation that even fax can be transmitted through free/much cheaper VOIP? My point is not about cutting the POTS line from the demarc...it is about just in case you do have to go back to some form of POTS at some time.

And for 9-1-1 (hopefully will never be needed) call, doesn't every household have a cellphone nowadays?

Oh well, some people may need go back to some form of POTS...maybe for business, who knows?

With the happenings of late, I get where you are coming from with this Jake. The explosive growth certainly seems to have upset the apple cart, and a platform that was noted for at least ADMIRABLE stability has lately become notoriously UNSTABLE. And there is only so many times you can go back an blame the explosive growth. Yea, we know, now fix it. This does not even cover the sub-par software that is churned out that is allowed to remain un-patched and bugladen for countless months on end.

Quite honestly, how much coding does it take to fix the existing CID bug in FPL 3.0.3.0 ???? This has been known for OVER 15 months!!!!!
