I use the free desktop application, no SIP adapter. Everything works fine. Incoming calls are directed to voice mail and I get email notificatio that there is a new message.
How can I change the voicemail message to my own, instead of the standard canned message that comes with the system?

when you logg into your vm, you an follow the IVR to change your voicemessage recordings. (information can be found in the FAQ's
