Has anyone compared any Data only plans in Ontario? If Dell voice works right I may drop my voice plan, I looked into data only but its only available for tablets, but im assuming i could purchase a sim card and put that into my phone.

I spoke with rogers, who said they do not allow this tablet sims in smart phones and telus who said it was fine. Im a rogers home service (phone, internet, and cable) customer right now, I may go to a rogers store to try out a tablet sim in my phone (most of there customer service reps do not care as long as they sign you up for a plan) and see how it goes.

I believe Rogers does IMEI filtering, which means your plan likely won't work.
FWIW, I had used a Telus iPad SIM in a HTC Hero (using a micro-SIM adapter) for almost a year at one point.

telus have the flex plan for tablet and it work on phone you just need to change ip.telus.com to isp.telus.com in the setting to be bill properly.

Hi,

Are you personally using this solution? Do you use a Micro sim card or a normal sim card?

I am trying this solution but I am being billed high rates with apn isp.telus.com and also sp.telus.com.

I recently talked to a Rogers customer relations agent and they explained to me that cause I am in a contract I can not just drop the voice part and keep the data but he told me if my contract was up then I would be able to cancel the voice plan entirely so in essence it would be a data only plan. I could cancel it now at a price of $320.

He told me that I could reduce the voice plan to 13/month and I would only get 40 anytime minutes and 45 cents per minute if i go over. This is cheaper then the cancellation fee. I think i am going to do it seeing as it will save me almost 40/month. I currently pay 12/month just to get caller id. and 34 for the voice part of my plan what a effing rip off. I have 6 gigs of data for $30.

And for the tablet sim card I was reading on one forum and the guy said he took the sim card from one of his tablets and put it in his galaxy nexus and it worked fine so he set it up with the built in sip function and it worked like a charm.

Since my galaxy s2 running ice cream sandwich has the stock SIP setting on the stock dialer I am going to purchase the sip unlock from fongo and use the stock dialer. I find that dell voice app kinda sucks. I can not connect bluetooth and the dailer does not have t9 function, and it does not rotate to horizontal mode when docked in my car.

Call quality is very good and I love the free part.

This is correct, my g/f works for third-party Rogers tech support and had to deal with someone who set themselves up this way today. A tablet is not a phone, and their system will recognize this, and your data-only plan won't work.

I use Google Voice for send/receive texts.
I realize this isn't an option for most Canadians, but if you have a friend with an American phone number it's little effort to get them to help you set one up.

Of course Google does in the TOS point out that their bots read through your text and e-mail for key words to use in targeted marketing and placing you into a demographic.

DV unlock/config keys are no longer being sold. Other parts of the operation, FPL, BudPhone, ZPhone etc are unaffected by the change in marketting by DV.

Had a chance to test DellVoice with a Data Only SIM with the Wind $15/1GB Mobile Data service on it. Seemed to work flawlessly (even though Wind's CSRs maintain that the DataStick SIMs cannot be used on a phone).

A few tricks that may apply to other cases:
-In the Wind case, the Mobile Data SIMs need the APN on the phone to be set to broadband.windmobile.ca instead of the internet.windmobile.ca APN used by SIMs on a regular Voice/Data plan.

I suspect the case maybe the same for the Rogers Data for Tablets offers, it's just a matter of digging around for the APN info that those SIMs need to use.

As long as the phone is either unlocked or locked to the provider you select, and is the correct type of phone for the SIM card. (GSM or HSPA/HSDPA+) then yes.

I haven't brought this up in a while as I don't have a GSM phone to do the testing with, but PetroCanada has a wireless offering on GSM which should support VoIP just fine for $8/mo unlimited pay-as you go. $5 for a SIM card, and I believe $20 is their smallest time package, so $25 to get testing.

Mike, thanks for asking.
Still not working. I asked Steve to check into it and still haven't received an answer... I doubt it's Bell though, as other outgoing calls with other VOIP apps work perfectly.

Was the issue with Bell ever resolved? I have a similar problem with my iPhone 4 and Bell Prepaid, where DV will not authenticate or connect so I cannot make or receive DV calls on data. It works well on wifi though.

Are those other VOIP apps using UDP or TCP? And are they SIP apps? I believe DV is using TCP, so it's *possible* (but unlikely IMO) that Bell is blocking SIP TCP, but not SIP UDP.
