Fongo on the go
Hello, I wish to use my new Pro iPad as an internet phone. I will port my number which is a Montreal area code number although I live in Sainte-Marthe-surge-lac (north shore outside Montreal 1) will I pay charges each time I call or text someone? 2) I wish to be free from the hassle of finding a coffee shop to make a call should I get a SIM card with data only and a stick or hot spot? Will I still have voice and text from Fongo ? what do you suggest? I am not tech savvy but sure are confused!
Re: Fongo on the go
If I was you I would start simple.
Download the app and get a free number to test things with. It's all free so all it will cost you is a little of your time.
This is a list of the area codes you can get a phone number. I can't see your town on the list so I guess you will have to see if there is one close https://support.fongo.com/hc/en-us/arti ... 806#quebec
To text non Fongo numbers you will need a texting plan. Currently a 6 month Canada wide text plan is $9.99 which is the best value. A single month is currently $2.79
There is a list of places that can be called for free here https://www.fongo.com/calling/free/ If the village/town/city is on that list, you should be able to call it for free. If it's not you will need to have calling credits. Calls that are in Canada but not in the free areas are usually 2 cents a minute, with a 4 cents connection fee per call https://account.fongo.com/calling/long-distance/
Fongo just needs an internet connection. That can come from wifi or over a cell network. I can't comment as to what will be best for you, but a hub or stick should work just fine if your iPad doesn't have cellular connection on it also.
As I started with though, download the app and give it a try. Using it on a wifi network should give you a fairly good idea of what it will do. Once you are happy with how things are you can then port your number in, as long as it is on this list https://support.fongo.com/hc/en-us/articles/212437366 which I don't think your town is on so you may hit a stumbling block there. From what I remember others have ported their number to a different exchange, but this resulted in people in the same area code being charged long distance. For this you might have to talk directly to Fongo about.

Re: Fongo on the go
Thank you Jake, I have cellular capabilities on the iPad. At this point I think I have to jump in and see what it does. I do have a Fongo number, but I need my old number. Now I will see if I can find a stick that fits the iPad. Freedom takes efforts Happy Holidays to you and yours
