Just ordered DSL

Post by Jake »

After crunching some numbers I decided to change from Bell internet to FPL. They came out to about the same at the end of the month, but with FPL I get unlimited bandwidth instead of a 25GB cap. I got fed up with having to explain to the girls that they couldn't look at any more YouTube videos because it will go over the limit and it will cost me more (mean old DAD :D ).

Hopefully the switch on will go without a hitch, but we will see on the 11th.

Big thank you to Morgan from FPL who got me set up, even though the call got dropped half way through.

To anyone else calling into FPL, he is worth trying to get as he has a headset where you can actually hear him very well.

FPL, your plan of giving away phone numbers to get me to buy your DSL has worked! Well played...

On the 11th I was hooked up with my new DSL line as promised. After a bit of fiddling, mainly due to something I did, I got it up and running.

I would however like to point out a few things that FPL might like to look into.

Firstly, the lack of information. The hardware came by FedEx very quickly and had a couple of sheets of paper in them telling me what to do, which translates to "plug it in and it should all be OK". I waited (and to be honest I am still waiting) for some sort of welcome pack. The sheet of paper has various login details on it (including my FPL admin login name and password, which I was a bit surprised to see printed on a bit of paper). Nowhere could I find any information on the router nor any information on setting up emails.

Just by chance I went to superspeed.ca as it in my DSL Credentials and found a Squirrel Mail login screen. I entered my details and got logged in, but I have no idea what POP or IMAP settings I should be using, if any! I should be able to set up another email address in the bundle I bought, but that 'how to' is not documented either. I know I can call support and get answers to these questions, but with every other ISP I have had connections with here, in the UK, and in Spain; I have always been given this information up front. I'm sure support has more important things to do than to keep giving out details that could easily be added to the sheet of paper you send out.

Talking of the sheet of paper, there are a few mistakes that could be cleaned up.
In the first line you have "Thank you for signing up with freephoneline.ca.ca!". - one too many .ca
Under the login details you have "VOIP Configuration Portal: https://www.freephoneline.ca" - http, instead of https?
Just below that you have "Help for the Porta VOIP..." - Portal?

Overall I am delighted with everything. I am not complaining here, just trying to point a few things out. I would recommend this package to anyone. But to recap, I would like to see/know/change
1. What are my email POP/IMAP account details?
2. I'm not sure I like my VOIP username and password printed out on a bit of paper and sent to me. I have other ways of getting my password if I forget it.
3. At least a link to the manual for the router (I have it now, but it took some looking).
4. Change the few typos. My spelling is not the best, but these should be fixed.

Thanks for everything FPL, I now can let my girls watch all the youtube videos they like. :D

Let me find out who's responsible for those welcome papers and make sure said mistakes are cleaned up!

We don't ship a manual with the router to prevent inexperienced people from tinkering with it and risking messing it up and/or wiping off our custom configuration file. Perhaps when we have the spare staff to warrant this idea, we might look into a more "custom" user manual just to highlight the "safe" stuff that we don't mind people modifying on their own ;)

Jake:

I also ordered DSL recently and spend a lot of time with their technical support to connect to the internet. Did you have to setup a brand band connection on your computer to be able to connect?

It was all pretty easy really, apart from the lack of information.

I actually made it worse by playing with the router they sent before hand. I managed to delete all the settings

What happened was I still had the Bell DSL line here before the FPL one installed, so I changed the settings so the VOIP ports pointed to my PBX here, which is how I wanted it, and the connection details were my Bell un/pw.

When the FPL DSL was installed I tried to change the settings and could not get it to connect. I called support to double check my un/pw details and the confirmed what I had been using. The only trouble is, he told me wrong also and it was only on a Hail Mary that I added @superspeed.ca to my username before it connected. It has been fine ever since.

Are you all connected now? and do you know your POP3 or IMAP details ? This is a big thing they leave out of the instructions.

Who still uses their ISP's email account today? We all have out "main email" through either out own domains, one of the large free sites (gmail/hotmail), work email or school. And now facebook. But an ISP email? Yikes.

The mail server would be mail.superspeed.ca, it supports both POP3 and IMAP. Login is your full email address, password is your password you set with that address.

We've begun work on refreshing all the shipping materials, so this information will be present upfront for all new customers once ready :)

OK
1. Most of my domains are not suitable for emailing people with.
2. Free email accounts (gmail, hotmail, ymail, etc) get denied when signing up for some things.
3. When people sign up to my sites with free email addresses, I give them less creditability and consider them more of a chargeback risk than people joining with an ISP email address. Sites I visit may feel the same (MaxMind certainly does) which I would like to avoid.
4. It is another email address from a different domain/IP to be able to sign up to contests with (wife's reason :) )
5. Backup. GoDaddy is not always 100% or the fastest.
6. I retired here to Canada 6 years ago, so me and "work" (if you can call it that) are the same.
7. I don't use Facebook.
8. Because for the last 17 years it is something I have always done and is my personal choice.

Interesting points. I bought a domain (laurent.ca) specifically for the purpose of providing me with a life-lasting permanent email address. I host it for free at google with google apps, and so far it's proven to be extremely reliable and does not suffer from the "free email account reputation" when signing up for sites, as it's my own domain and I sign it (SPF records in DNS for authenticity).

Personally, I don't want an ISP email only because I become attached to that copmany. I prefer to be free of leaving any time I chose. It's great that we can now do that with phone numbers and cellphones in canada! Yay CRTC, *sometimes*, you do the right thing :)

Edit: Woops. I'm hijacking this thread now. Sorry! Nuke at will :)

I will say that I don't use it for my main email, so loosing the address is no great loss and helps get rid of the spam that builds up if nothing else. My main email addresses are my "work" emails but not an address I give my family.

Yes I am connected now, but I have to setup a broadband connection on my computer, just wondering if anyone else needed to do that.
I got the POP and SMTP info by calling the support. I agree that it would be easier if it is included in the instructions or on the website.

Nope  I haven't had to set up the DSL connection on a computer since using the very first ADSL adapter BT used back in the UK http://www.modem-help.co.uk/Alcatel/Spe ... -A--B.html It was a USB item not built into the router like now.

Are you saying you have to leave your computer on to get a connection? What router did they give you?

Your modem handles the connection Jake - I think you have the Thomson TG784 right? That modem handles all your PPPoE and VOIP connections internally - as long as the modem itself is powered on, the internet is active.

Yes that is right Steve. It is not me that has had to set up a connection on the computer, Cristina seems to have had to.

I was just saying that the last time I had to do that was many, many years ago when ADSL was first available with BT (The UK version of Bell).

Thinking about it; Cristina, are you sure you set the connection up on your computer? Or is it possible that you were asked to browse to 192.168.1.254 (which is the router) to put in the details?

Yes, I have to set the connection up on my computer.

The modern I have is WiFI Thomson 784 Modem/Router. The connection would not work when the computer is connected through the Ethernet port (the 4 yellow port at the back of the modem/router). I have to setup a broadband connection with my username and password in order to connect. I though it was weird because I've never have to set that up with other ISPs. It took a long long time for technical support to tell me what I needed to do to connect (kudos to them for being patient). The modem/router came in pre-configured, I am not sure if it is a problem on the modern/router setup but I don't have the instruction to setup the router.

Cristina, after the troubleshooting and investigating we had done to isolate the issues you were (are) experiencing, it was identified that you are on some newer hardware being used in the Bell network. We are currently working on a permanent fix for you, so your current connection method is only temporary.
