FASTER alert that there is a message waiting

Post by mitwtim »

This was discussed in a previous problem thread when the MWI (message waiting indicator) was not working at all. While troubleshooting the problems it came out that the MWI indicator is only toggled on or off, once every 10 minutes. Ten minutes is a long time to wait if you were running for the phone and just missed it. Having moved from Rogers Home Phone and then many years before that being with Bell, I know that there MWI is changed as soon as a voicemail is left. It is as though a switch is toggled as soon as the voicemail is saved that initiates the change to the MWI. For some reason FPL's system is setup to poll every single phone once every ten minutes. The present FPL model seems like it would be a resource hog, which is probably why it is so slow. But, if it is possible to make changes to go with a more responsive model I am sure that it would be appreciated by FPL users.

One idea that was pitched was to allow users to opt-in to the MWI service and turn it off for everyone else. That would allow FPL to continue with their current model of polling a large number (still not very efficient), but it would probably drastically cut down on the total number of accounts polled at least. If you could get it down to 1 minute that would be okay. FYI - Rogers and Bell is almost instantaneous.

Here was the original thread if you'd like some additional details.
