I would like this feature too. Both outgoing and incoming. Outgoing should be free because it doesn't cost FPL any extra except bandwitdth.

Doesn't cost FPL any extra, except extra costs of course!

With possibly several thousand customers, I suspect bandwidth *is* a major cost concern for them.

This feature was not forgotten, I can assure you that much. It was put on the back-burner pending some crucial upgrades that took place, when those were done we had reshuffled our priorities and this request was put on hold. As laurent pointed out the potential impact on our service could be very large, in addition there would be no revenue generated for these calls, and having thousands a day would quite possibly diminish the likelihood of 'free' out of 'free'phoneline over time because of this large loss in revenue (however unlikely).

As this may be misunderstood by some, I'd like to reinforce how hypothetical the situation above is; there are no current, or future plans to take the 'free' out of 'free'phoneline. Freephoneline.ca will be and will always remain just that, free.

Bandwith usage should this ever become a reality should be negligible at first.

In fact if the backend guys know their stuff and can enable SIP Invites... the connection can be totally point-to-point (no network usage for FPL... simple SIP signaling only... a la SipSorcery). I admit this path does not come without its headaches, especially as it pertains on cross-compatibility between other VSPs and their handling of SIP Invites.

Also... just to diminish the cost factor...this is one of those features I would be willing to pay a fee for.

In fact I know you guys have hosted-PBX like services available for comercial/business purposes ... if you had the time and patience to work some of the same functions in as premium (fee-based) features for advanced personal users you may find another revenue stream (an operation much like FPL to use for comparison to understand what I mean is something like Voip.ms ... with the added benefit that you actually happen to be your own CLEC and wouldn't have to rely on upstream providers)

Features that I'd be willing to pay a fee for:
-SIP URI Forwarding
-Simultaneous ringing/forwarding
-Programable call hunting (ring 1 destination, then 2 destinations then 3... if no answer failover to another group of destinations).
-Failover forwarding (if busy, if DND, if not registered, if within a certain time-frame)

I agree with emoci. The following are important to me to pay a REASONABLE Annual fee for:
Features that I'd be willing to pay a fee for:
-SIP URI Forwarding
-Simultaneous ringing/forwarding
-Programable call hunting (ring 1 destination, then 2 destinations then 3... if no answer failover to another group of destinations).
-Failover forwarding (if busy, if DND, if not registered, if within a certain time-frame)

PLUS - with FMFM/Call Hunting I'd expect to press * or some button for the call to be transferred. i.e. if I'm in the subway and don't press * then the call should go to my fpl voicemail, not my cell phone.

I'm going to chime in only as the devil's advocate here... I agree and think those features would be great, and in fact I think some of these things can be accomplished at no cost which would still align and be true to "FREE_phoneline."

HOWEVER, I recognize these features are twofold being advanced features and VoIP-unique features. The question I have is what Freephoneline's business model is. To me and as a CLEC provider (via Fibernetics), their primary concern is a solid public telephone service... meaning that their goals and growth are targeted towards general full-service public consumer use. Contrast this to our feature requests which is more towards online-VoIP user. I realize they sound the same, especially when FREEphoneline is free via their softphone, but I see this as being that really fine line in between that they've found their niche, essentially the best of both worlds.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'd love these features, but there are people who've solved this on their own by setting up Freeswitch/Asterisk boxes that do all of this AND MORE. It's not a priority for Freephoneline, and for what they're offering, I'm glad I get to use it for free with more coverage area being provided. I can deal with these features otherwise... :)

Another idea though: is if Freephoneline would be willing to partner with even some of us end-users to provide some of these featuers to those who don't know how and/or willing to pay.

Anyways, that's my 2 cents... if Freephoneline can roll out these features (free? heh) that'd be awesome too. :)

From what I understand, some people use services like SIP Sorcery and Voxalot or other services to do some advanced call management... you may want to look into these if these features mean a lot to you! :)

I don't think they should allow this. It would just open up the network for abuse.
Anyone could sign up for 100 free numbers then forward them to different SIP URLs. This is the reason why any forwarding number can be used only once.

I think this would be a great idea. It could be restricted to those purchasing config files to prevent abuse. Come to think of it, I imagine that it would be necessary to do so to prevent abuse.

And supporting sip reinvites (audio bypass) would be an extra bonus!

There are some free PSTN-->SIP services, ex. US/IpKall or UK/ukddi.
You can get Canadian DID from voip.ms if you don't mind pay a little money (GTA DID 0.99/Month + 0.01/Min)
if you really want a free Canadian DID-->SIP service, try "TellFi + IpKall" but that's only 100min free call.
