Link sys PAP2 dropping outgoing calls after 33 secs of talk

Post by Ed_tech »

Please Help! After my system has been working fine for years and now with a Fax machine, was working fine also ,but after a month or so with a fax machine my Linksys PAP2 keeps dropping outgoing calls after 33 secs of talk. Incoming calls seem fine.
My router is the Bell Home Hub 2000, Bell Fibe. It has been fine for 1.5 yrs, so I don't even know what changed.
What can be causing this?

One response was:

SIP ALG in a router can be causing this. SIP ALG modifies SIP packets and can cause problems if the feature is not implemented properly.
So, if there's an invite handshake, and the proper response isn't received, the call is dropped.
Try disabling SIP ALG in your router, and then reboot both it and your ATA.
I'm uncertain if it would help, but you could also try switching your proxy to voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060

Ed_tech: So I tried looking for this SIP ALG setting, could not find it anywhere on the Bell router. Then I tried changing the Proxy setting on the ATA from an ip address to voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060. This cause the dial tone to be lost.

Anymore ideas?

The setting doesn't exist in it.

When that problem first occurred, the first thing that should be done is to reboot both the router and the ATA, in that order.
Then I tried changing the Proxy setting on the ATA from an ip address to voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060. This cause the dial tone to be lost.
I'm uncertain as to why the Proxy server would have been set to a static IP before, unless you're having DNS issues.

The settings for your ATA are the same as http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16294
Use the .pdf guide

But on Line 1>>SIP settings, change SIP Port to 23527
and, in particular, look at what Mango wrote in the post below.

That is, make sure that the following settings are enabled:

"Handle VIA received: yes
Handle VIA rport: yes
Substitute VIA Addr: yes"

Ensure those are enabled.
Anymore ideas?
If enabling those 3 settings don't work, after testing on both voip.freephoneline.ca and voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060, and you aren't hearing anything, send in a ticket and ask for a forced registration:

Well, tried the above instructions, followed the guide and made the SIP port and Handle changes, reset Bell HUB 2000 and ATA in that order, but to no avail.
As for the voip.freephoneline.ca and voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 , I just loose the dial tone.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Your RTP port range is UDP 16384 to 16482, by the way. Hopefully, you want have to port forward from your router to your ATA.

What part (TAB) of the ATA should these Required Settings be in?

SIP Server:
voip.freephoneline.ca
Alternative SIP Server:
voip2.freephoneline.ca

SIP Server:
voip.freephoneline.ca
Alternative SIP Server:
voip2.freephoneline.ca
Line-->Proxy

You have three choices:

1) voip.freephoneline.ca
2) voip2.freephoneline.ca
3) voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060

#3 is for dealing with SIP ALG issues when you're issued a terrible modem + router combination by your ISP. SIP ALG is sometimes enabled by default in these horrible devices with no capacity for the user to disable it without asking their ISP to do it for them. With Rogers, sometimes that's an option if the customer contacts them. I'm uncertain that option is available with Bell. Usually, it's better to stick these modem/router combos in bridge mode and to use your own router.
Transport:
UDP
On some Linksys ATAs, that would sometimes be found under SIP-->RTP Parameters-->SIP Trans Protocol
And the user could select "TCP" or "UDP", but I don't think that option is available in your ATA.

5060
If you don't specify a port after the Proxy server (:6060), it's going to default to 5060 anyway.

By the way, changing Line 1>>SIP>>SIP Port setting to something higher than port 20000 (usually defaults to 5060) is another attempt to get around forced SIP ALG issues in some routers, and also helps somewhat to thwart SIP scanners. SIP Port here (doesn't have to be 5060) differs from FPL's SIP port.

The required settings are outlined in the .pdf guide: http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16294
But I doubt that's the issue. You can certainly reset your ATA and apply the suggested settings.
I suspect you will still have a problem.

Audio packets aren't reaching your ATA. That can be for one of the following reasons:

1. FPL's server is sending the audio packets to your LAN IP instead of your WAN IP.
2. Your NAT Firewall is blocking packets from FPL SIP servers.

I suspect the issue is #1. The reason I suspect this is the case is because you said you had an IP address for the Proxy before. Possibly that IP address was for voip3.freephoneline.ca

If so, this is the problem: http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=17074
Definitely read xoy74 and, in particular, Mango's posts. So you can get Fongo support to do a force registration by sending in a ticket request, which should force proxy audio for you at the switch so that audio is now sent to your WAN IP. Using a STUN server isn't a great idea either.

You can try to test using voip3.freephoneline.ca to see whether that works for you. If it does, #1 is definitely the problem. Note that using voip3.freephoneline.ca for an extended period will result in an account ban. So if voip3.freephoneline.ca does work, you're going to have to do what I wrote earlier and send in a ticket. Make sure you switch to a different SIP server after testing briefly.

2. If after forcing registration or testing with voip3.freephoneline.ca, you're still not receiving audio, then your firewall is interfering with your ATA's capacity to receive audio packets and/or communicate with FPL's servers. You would have to port forward, quite likely, RTP port range (UDP ports 16384 to 16482) from your router to your ATA, at the very least. Port forwarding is generally not a good idea for security reasons (punching holes in your NAT firewall), but you may have no other choice if #1 doesn't work for you.

Think I missed something here. What's the registration state of the ATA when the dial tone is lost?

Registration interval needs to be 3600 (1hr) with a 120 (2 min) retry.

The mystery has been solved! Thanks for your advice. I ended up changing Proxy Server to voip.freephoneline.ca, but in IP form. Don't know what changed with the previous server.

So you must not have been able to receive a registered state before when not using IP addresses for the Proxy.

From my first reply in this thread,
Liptonbrisk wrote:I'm uncertain as to why the Proxy server would have been set to a static IP before, unless you're having DNS issues.

Something is definitely wrong if you can't do DNS lookups properly.

Try Google DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/

Or Open DNS
208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

You shouldn't have to be using IP addresses for the proxy server. The IP of the proxy can change to something you're not supposed to use.

Actually, in your ATA, what do you have listed under System>>Optional Network Configuration?
What's listed for Primary and Secondary DNS?
What's listed for DNS server order and DNS Query mode?

If DNS server order was set to DHCP before, then this problem is pretty weird because it would appear that your Bell Hub (or Bell) is using unreliable DNS servers.

If DNS server order was set to manual with DNS servers manually specified in your PAP2 that you no longer use (from a different ISP or if the DNS IP's changed), then this issue makes sense.

Try setting your Primary DNS server to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) or 208.67.222.222 (open dns) . Then set your Secondary DNS to 8.8.4.4 (google dns) or 208.67.222.220 (open dns).
Set DNS server order to "DHCP, manual". Set DNS Query mode to parallel.

By using "DCHP, manual", your ATA will use the DHCP-supplied DNS table from your router. If it's not found, your ATA will use the manual entry of the IP address of the DNS server (open dns or google).
If there's still an issue here, then there's a problem with the DNS servers provided by your Bell Hub. If so, switch DNS server order to "manual, DHCP."

Afterwards, stop using IP addresses for the proxy server.
