Linksys PAP2T Background Hiss

I've been using Freephoneline with the Linksys PAP2T for a few years and there's been some annoying background noise or hiss on the line for sometime now. I honestly don't remember if the noise has always been there, but I don't think so and I don't remember exactly when it started. There has also been a few times recently when I couldn't hear callers, but they could hear me. I used to have the Linksys connected to an original Apple Airport Extreme, but recently moved in with family who have a D-Link DIR-615 and the noise is still there. So I don't think it's the router.

Should I consider a new ATA or is there anything else I can try first to improve the sound quality?

Try reloading the firmware on the PAP2T. If its still there then it could be electronic problem in the device and probably need to replace it. Guess its worth a try before you buy something else. At least with a firmware reload you can input all the required settings for FPL in case something got changed unexpectedly to cause the problem for you.

I'm already using the latest firmware 5.1.6, but I tried to download it again and the file is no longer available for download.

You should be able to get the bin as well as the upgrade utility built into the zip file download.
