Background noise issue

Post by Henri9009 »

Hi to all!

I'm using Freephoneline as my main home telephone.

I recently changed my Linksys Pap2 adapter, and everything is back on track, except one thing.

I'll try to be as clear as possible.

There's background noise ONLY when something is making a sound on the line (a voice, a ring tone).

For instance, when I speak with someone, the background noise occurs only when the person speaks. Between his/her sentences, there's no noise.

I'm using, as before the adapter change, the G711u codec.

Thanks a lot for your help!

In your PAP2's advanced view for your FPL Line tab (Line 1?), there's two settings you should look at found under Audio Configuration.

They are

1) Silence Supp Enable:

and

2) Silence Threshold:

Make sure Silence Supp Enable is set to no.

If it's already set to no, then possibly your handset has an aggressive silence suppression feature. FPL does not suppress background noise.

Damn it... I've been trying and searching... nothing works.

Can it be my D-Link device (I changed it a while ago)?

Thanks!

If you've double-checked the settings I mentioned previously, I see two choices:

1) Try another phone

2) The noise suppression could be from the carrier being used for the phone call, or from noise suppression on the ATA or handset being used by the person you're speaking to on the other end of the phone call.

This situation has nothing to do with your router.

Thanks for answering!

Silence Supp Enable is set to NO and Silence Threshold is on medium.

I've just bought another phone, we'll see.

I'm not sure if changing Silence Threshold has any effect if Silence Supp Enabled is off. Obviously, in this case, you should keep it set to No.
I'm not sure, but I thought that if Silence Supp Enable is off, then the Silence Threshold setting doesn't matter.

However, it probably wouldn't hurt to try changing Silence Threshold to "low".

Anyway, the issue still may be noise suppression by the carrier--or on the ATA or handset being used by the person you're speaking to on the other end of the phone call.
That is, the issue may have absolutely nothing to do with what's going on, on your end.

One last thing I would try is making sure that you're only using the G.711u codec. On the Line tab in your ATA, set preferred code to G711u, and
set use preferred codec only to "yes".
