DNS Servers settings

Post by GenChick »

When I purchased my FPL keys, I used ATA from my previous VoIP provider that was lying in box for two years. I had to remove password by method described here: http://grandstreamunlock.blogspot.ca/20 ... k-ata.html In order to remove password I had to change all four DNS servers!
Registering my ATA with FPL worked and I had no service problem, but… then I read that I have to replaced DNS servers after unlocking my ATA. I tried to use OpenDNS servers as well as my ISP provider’s DNS and phone service works fine until reboot, then I cannot access setting and have to unlock ATA again. After reset, by default, DNS servers are blank, but without them ATA does not register! If I put back DNS servers (167.88.118.111) used in unlocking, the phone service works fine and rebooting doesn’t affect anything. Please, see screenshot attached. I stuck now!!! What am I doing wrong?

Also, FPL “VoIP Unlock Key Credentials” says “It is always best to use the DNS name for your SIP server as our infrastructure is always expanding/changing/being maintained. The IP addresses which you register to will change over time.” How would I do that? Please, help!
Thank you!

While I don't have your locked Basictalk ATA, I would guess changing DNS servers in conjunction with resetting the ATA is what you're doing wrong . . .

"If you do a factory reset you must unlock the ATA again before it has a chance to connect to the internet. Otherwise it will download its configuration from Vonage and the unlock will not work anymore."

FWIW, you'd be far better served by posting your temporarily unlocked ATA related questions over at https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28597 ... icTalk-ATA.
Also, this seems like a better, permanent, solution: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29990138-
I accept no responsibility for bricked devices.

The likelihood of people here having knowledge about this locked ATA is not as high as those posting in the thread at dslreports: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28597 ... icTalk-ATA.

Also, FPL “VoIP Unlock Key Credentials” says “It is always best to use the DNS name for your SIP server as our infrastructure is always expanding/changing/being maintained. The IP addresses which you register to will change over time.” How would I do that?
Enter voip.freephoneline.ca, voip2.freephoneline.ca, or voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 (voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 is used to circumvent the SIP ALG feature in routers) for the Primary SIP Server in your ATA.

Thank you for the quick response! Sorry for the confusion! I don’t seek help in unlocking my ATA here. Please, be patient with me as I learn on the go. Thank you!
Since guide published here http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18839 does not mention anything about DNS servers settings, I assume it must be left blank (since it is blank after reset). Am I right or wrong? :? Do you people have DNS servers settings filled in or not? If yes, what are the settings?
This is what I think happening: ATA was registered wit FPL with DNS servers settings (167.88.118.111) in place, so now, if this settings removed, FPL doesn’t recognize my ATA and doesn’t want to register. Correct me if I’m wrong!

That is what I have! Thought that I have to create some other "special, unique" name.

Hi,

That setting where you imputed these IP's->167.88.118.111 does not do anything unless you connected to the Internet from the ATA and use PPOE.

You should not alter with DNS settings on the ATA- your Internet Modem or Router should be doing that not the ATA

I personally will not use a device that was locked by other company unless they can remove it from their system and make it factory again.

There are quite a few unlocked devices out there at any store and if you choose one, it will resolve this issue permanently.

Someone can change DNS servers if that person desires. Typically, it's not required, especially if someone is being assigned LAN IP and DNS settings (dynamically) via a router, which is what most people do.

However, you're dealing with a locked Basictalk ATA--and not an unlocked HT-701; and I'm uncertain how the locked Basictalk ATA behaves while locked since I don't own one.

The instructions indicate if you reset your ATA, the ATA becomes locked again. And you do mention the word, reset, in your original post. So what's less clear to me is at what point in your original description you're dealing with a locked ATA (and frankly, whether you know). Again, I suggest posting in the dslreports thread instead where they're all unlocking this ATA.
I don’t seek help in unlocking my ATA here.
I suggest that's what you should be pursuing since your DNS questions are related to using a locked/temporarily unlocked ATA and since your ATA is not permanently unlocked yet. Conversely, your Proxy Server question at the bottom of your original post is related to using FPL.
Do you people have DNS servers settings filled in or not?
Some do, in particular if they don't trust their ISP's DNS servers for whatever reason (ex. reliability). Most don't (typically, ISP dynamically assigned DNS servers work fine). Consequently, the guide you're referring to doesn't mention changing DNS servers (since it's usually not required). And most of us are not using a locked ATA--so it doesn't matter.
This is what I think happening: ATA was registered wit FPL with DNS servers settings (167.88.118.111) in place, so now, if this settings removed, FPL doesn’t recognize my ATA and doesn’t want to register.

"The way the "easy" procedure works, is that your ATA's DNS is pointing at a server that I own, which has a DNS zone for vonage.net and the host httpconfig.vonage.net points to the same server which also hosts a web server that will serve the configuration file which resets the settings. Once the configuration file is served, the DNS servers are replaced with some public ones (Google's public DNS servers and the OpenDNS servers).'

and

"If you do a factory reset you must unlock the ATA again before it has a chance to connect to the internet. Otherwise it will download its configuration from Vonage and the unlock will not work anymore."

Your original post mentioned you reset your ATA.

Again, you would be far better served by posting your temporarily unlocked/locked ATA DNS questions in the following dslreports thread: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28597 ... icTalk-ATA.

That is what I have! Thought that I have to create some other "special, unique" name.
No. Those are the names assigned for FPL's servers. If you use another name your ATA will not connect properly--just as entering an incorrect website url will not connect properly when entered into a web browser.

voip.freephoneline.ca currently is 208.65.240.44. But Freephoneline may decide at some point to change voip.freephoneline.ca to some other IP (maybe 208.65.240.55, for example). Should that occur, using "208.65.240.44" instead of "voip.freephoneline.ca" (without the quotation marks) for the Primary SIP server will not work as intended by Freephoneline. That's what the instructions you read meant.

The following instructions are not a permanent unlock solution:

https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28600371-

- disconnect your internet
- plug in the ATA, wait until it comes up and dial ***** to find the IP address
- login to the ATA with password "123" (that's the user password)
- go to the Basic tab and change all 4 DNS servers to 167.88.118.111
- click Update, Apply, Reboot
- reconnect your internet
- wait until the ATA reboots twice (you can do a ping -t ipaddress to find when it stops replying and comes back). Should be no more than 3-4 min
- your ATA should be unlocked, you can login with the password "admin" and configure it for your service provider

"If you do a factory reset you must unlock the ATA again before it has a chance to connect to the internet. Otherwise it will download its configuration from Vonage and the unlock will not work anymore."

Conversely, this seems like a better, permanent, solution: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29990138-. But the outlook may not be promising: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30130202-.
I accept no responsibility for bricked devices.

If you haven't permanently unlocked (and you haven't yet) your ATA, I strongly suggest posting follow-up DNS questions pertaining to what occurs after temporarily unlocking your ATA in this thread: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28597 ... icTalk-ATA. If you're really lucky, toro is a registered FPL forum user, will see your FPL forum thread, and will respond here. I'm uncertain the chances of that happening are good.

Should you discover you need a new unlocked ATA, I recommend Obihai OBi200 or OBi202 ATAs sold by Newegg Canada, which are the most powerful ATAs intended for residential use, despite Obihai having, in my opinion, poor customer support policies.
