Couple issues preventing me from signing up.

Post by Darkmatter »

1. I had to use my cell pay as you go phone to get the SMS text for part of the registration process. I then changed it to my landline that I want to port but later in the registration process it still showed my cell number so I put my landline number in again and it told me I had changed my number to many times today.
2. The email I was sent to verify my email address comes back with an "invalid URL" error.
3. I can't pick my town in the drop down menu because it isn't there, but I confirmed with Fongo already that you do offer service in my town and that my number can be ported. My postal code is N7A-1X8.

Thanks

For 1 and 2, you'll need to submit a ticket: https://support.fongo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. Select "my account inquiry" for the final issue type.

For #3, if the drop-down menu is for selecting a local phone number (just select a place where you might like a phone number; you're going to lose it anyway after porting because the original number you're given is replaced with the ported phone number), you can't select your town because FPL doesn't offer free phone numbers there: https://www.freephoneline.ca/phoneNumber. You can only port in a local number (if it's possible to do so): https://support.fongo.com/hc/en-us/arti ... 66#ontario.

For 3, does that mean I won't get free local calls with FPL in my town, or just that I can't get a new number from my town? Which doesn't matter since I'm porting my old number over.

Thanks.

You will be able to make free outgoing calls to Goderich: https://www.freephoneline.ca/cityListing. Everyone using FPL can.
However, your outgoing CallerID number is going to appear as whatever FPL number you choose until you port your Goderich number into your FPL account.
You may also want consider whether your friends and family can call your FPL number for free when choosing a phone number from FPL.
or just that I can't get a new number from my town?
Correct. You can't obtain a free Goderich phone number, at the moment, from Freephoneline: https://www.freephoneline.ca/phoneNumber.
Which doesn't matter since I'm porting my old number over.
Correct (except there will be a period until the number is ported when you're stuck with your original FPL number). Frankly, if you haven't already, I would double check whether it's possible to port your Goderich number by providing FPL with your full Goderich phone number (for me the key point is providing the full number so that they can double check) in a ticket (porting inquiry): https://support.fongo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. I appreciate that you've been told yes before, but I'm not sure if you just provided your postal code instead of the full Goderich phone number. The point is that, if it were me, I'd want to make sure the porting department was dealing with proper info when responding.

Edit: For #2, you may want to try copying and pasting the URL you received into a different web browser (if you were using Microsoft Edge or I.E. before, perhaps try Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome). If that doesn't work, you'll need to submit a ticket.

I submitted a ticket with my town, postal code, and number and they said they can port it, so that's great news. I tried your suggestion about the URL and I still got the error. I'll submit a ticket about it on Monday. I asked this in another forum but I might as well ask it here too. How long after I tell FPL to port my number will it take for my current service provider to cut me off? Also, I signed up with a new ISP because the price was WAY better then my current one and they'll keep it at that price for 2 years. I'm completely dropping my current company which I've been with for years and been happy with everything but the price. I hardly ever turn on the TV so I'm cancelling that outright and with the cheaper internet and VOIP I'll save anywhere from $100-$130 a MONTH! The initial upfront cost is high. The Obi, the unlock key, number porting etc but I figure I'll make it all back in 2 months. Depending on the answers I get here about how long it'll take for my current number to go dead I'll either wait till my new ISP is up and running to port my number or port it a couple day before that. I won't cancel anything until I'm completely switched over. Actually that makes me wonder, since I'm not cancelling anything until I have all my new stuff in place what happens when you have 2 ISP's sending signals through cable to your home? Sure you'll have a 2nd modem and can hook it up to the new one but I never considered if the 2 signals would interfere with each other. I plan on first getting my new ISP up, or within a day or 2 of being up, and then doing the number porting depending on what replies I get here about how long it'll take for my current number to go dead. Then, once my new ISP is set up and my number is ported I'll break the bad news to my current provider.

Your current service will die when the number has been successfully ported.

Also, click https://support.freephoneline.ca/hc/en- ... r-porting-, and read.
That says 14 days for the number to be ported. Your phone number should continue work with your current provider until the number has been successfully ported.

what happens when you have 2 ISP's sending signals through cable to your home
That doesn't happen. What happens is that a transfer order is sent to your existing ISP. And then the service is switched over.
Then, once my new ISP is set up and my number is ported I'll break the bad news to my current provider.
You don't (and shouldn't) have to tell your current telephone service provider anything. Once your number is ported, billing stops automatically from your previous telephone company.
If it doesn't, contact CCTS: https://www.ccts-cprst.ca/for-consumers ... aint-form/.

That should also hold true for ISPs. All that's typically required is attaching your existing coaxial cable connector to your new modem, which you can do easily yourself.

The only issue is if you're on an existing contract with any of these services.

Then I should port my number before the ISP switch because my phone is through the same company. In fact, I think I've been paying for a version of VOIP this whole time. My phone is through my ISP and my phone line connects to a box that has a Cable TV/Internet cable hooked up to it.

One question I forgot to ask. It says if you lose power you lose your phone because you lose your internet. I have a UPS and plan to have my modem, Obi, router, and phone hooked up to this UPS, so if the power goes out won't I still have phone service? (Unless power is down at the ISP source.) Those devices don't typically draw a lot of power so my UPS should keep them up for a fair amount of time. I also have a cell phone if my plan falls through.

VoIP works provided

1) your internet service is working, and
2) the SIP server(s) being used are working.

#1 requires both electricity and a good quality internet service. Having a UPS helps when you have a power outage until the UPS battery (or batteries) run out of power.
A UPS doesn't help when you have poor signal strength running to your modem or when you have local node congestion (those are ISP issues).

#2 is out of your control completely. FPL's SIP servers have been up 99% of the time over the past two years.
