Could use some more explanation about part of Obi202 Guide.

Post by Darkmatter »

Its about the digimap. I understand the first 1 or 2 but why would the 3rd one be [2-9] when phone numbers can have the number 1 in them? Also I don't get the 211, 311,etc part. Those aren't area codes as far as I'm aware and I didn't see an explanation of what they represent. I also don't know why you need to put in specific numbers unless that is some sort of speed dial system. For me, our area codes are 519 and 226. The *98 and 911 are self explanitory although I tried putting *98 in a digimap and despite my phone working at a basic level *98 just gives me a long beep tone.

I'm sure this is just the first of several questions as I work my way through the guide but for now I have basic phone usage. :)

Thanks.

"Here’s an alternative example:
(1xxxxxxxxxx|011XX.S3|[2-9]xxxxxxxxx|<211:4163974636>|<311:4163922489>|<511:4162354686>|<6
11:4164772010>|<811:8667970000>|*98|911)
The digitmap is appropriate for Toronto. For 211, 311, 511, 611, 811 you will need to look up the
corresponding phone numbers for your area and replace the phone number after the colon."

Canadian phone numbers/area codes don't start with "1" in them. If you need to dial (or, more, likely, are used to dialing by force of habit) 1 first, to designate long distance, that's already covered by 1xxxxxxxxxx.
There's no need to dial "1" in front of area codes when calling phone numbers in FPL's free calling area: [2-9]xxxxxxxxx works. Dialing 5191234567, for example, is covered or matched by [2-9]xxxxxxxxx. The first digit is a number anywhere between 2 and 9 (it's 5, in this example). If you're used to dialing 1 in front of 800 numbers then, 1xxxxxxxxxx is needed.

[2-9]xxxxxxxxx is for 10 digit dialing.

For general usage with FPL, this digitmap is fine: (1xxxxxxxxxx|011XX.S3|[2-9]xxxxxxxxx|*98|[2-9]11)

If I dial 5191234567, 1xxxxxxxxxx doesn't match because the phone number dialed doesn't start with a 1 and is 10 digits instead of 11; and 011XX. doesn't match either because the number I dialed doesn't start with 011.
[2-9]xxxxxxxxx does match 5191234567.

Also, click http://www.obihai.com/docs/OBi-DigitMap ... l-v1-1.pdf.

Also I don't get the 211, 311,etc part.
Visit http://www.cnac.ca/other_codes/n11/n11_codes.htm.

In different cities around Canada, 3 digit, N11 code dialing is supposed to reach specific services from a regular landline. For example, calling 511 in Toronto from a regular Bell landline reaches Ontario Ministry of Transportation traveller information service, otherwise known as Ontario 511. But when people in Toronto dial 511 using some VoIP services, nothing (good) happens: 511 is actually dialed, and that call isn't transferred to Ontario 511: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/travel ... bout.shtml. In order to reach Ontario 511 service, in some cases, Toronto VoIP users have to dial 4162354686 (which is the actual phone number) instead of 511. But if they specify <511:4162354686> in their digitmap, then 511 is replaced with 4162354686 when they dial "511", and the call will reach Ontario 511. It'll be just like dialing 511 using a Bell landline in Toronto again.

Similarly, when you dial 211 in Toronto, you're supposed to reach http://www.211toronto.ca/detail/en/82517. But with many VoIP services, you won't unless <211:4163974636> is specified.
Same issue.

The example you quoted is for people in Toronto. I'm not going to look up (and I doubt most guide writers will bother either) related numbers for everyone's city (plus those phone numbers can change). That's work for the user to do. Where these 3 digit N11 codes are supposed to reach is dependent upon where the FPL user lives, and it's possible that in some areas some services aren't available.

FPL now includes support for N11 codes natively (depending on the FPL account number), for people with VoIP unlock keys. When I started using FPL 7 years ago, 311 didn't work with FPL and ATAs without specifying full phone numbers for people in Toronto and Montreal. If you're expecting a N11 code to work, and it doesn't without specifying the full number when dialing, you'll know why. https://www.fongo.com/government-service-numbers/

Using 411 costs money, by the way.

911 always has worked with FPL.

*98 in a digimap and despite my phone working at a basic level *98 just gives me a long beep tone.
Refer to page 32 in version 1.50 of the PDF guide. You need to go through all the pages and steps, slowly and carefully, in the order that they're listed. Change Blind Transfer from the default of *98 to *99.

Anyway, I just had surgery on my foot. I may not be around as often online. Hopefully you get your service working the way you want.

OK I somehow made a booboo. I was at this step,

- Dial ***0 from the phone connected to the OBi202
- Enter 30#
- Press 1 to Enter a New Value
- Press 1# to Enable
- Press 1 to Save

and I thought I did it right but the voice said "Option 1 set to (string of numbers).

I need to know how to return it to whatever its default setting was.

Thanks

That's for enabling Access from WAN:

and I thought I did it right but the voice said "Option 1 set to (string of numbers).

If you do, you likely will not be able to access the OBi202 via its LAN IP, if the device is connected to your router.
And if you changed something, which is highly unlikely (you probably just heard the LAN IP address of the device), you won't be resetting whatever change you made.

- Dial ***0 from the phone connected to the OBi202
- Enter 30#
- Press 2 to set default value

That's probably not what you should be doing though. You will need AccessFromWAN enabled to access your ATA via its LAN IP if it's connected to a router. Default has
AccessFromWAN disabled.

Had a weird experience. I'll admit I'm not done configuring my Obi due to being sick but I didn't like the short ring tone so I changed it from the default (Ring #1) to 2 + 4, 2 + 4 and it worked, my phone range longer and then paused longer. The problem is that right after making the change my phone couldn't enter correct extensions when I called a place that had a computer prompt to enter a persons extension. It would keep saying that it didn't recognize the extension. At first I thought this was a problem on their end but when it happened to me at a different place I realized it was me. So, I reset my ring config back to default and now extensions are working again. Anyone know why this would happen when all I am changing is the length of the ring and the length of the pause between rings?

Thanks

You should probably get that done first: http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 805#p73839 (latest version of the guide will always be found there).

Regardless, DTMF has nothing to do with incoming ring patterns. Consequently, I strongly believe the two incidents you're referring to are completely coincidental and unrelated.
I just did a quick search for a site that explains DTMF: http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/definition/DTMF. (I'm not advocating for this site; I didn't even really read it; it just saves me from explaining).

Make sure you're not using a speakerphone or handsfree mode when you're testing. And try another telephone.
Hands free mode with DTMF (Dual Tone - Multi Frequency or touch tone) can cause all sorts of problems, not the least of which is having tones play over the speaker that are then, subsequently, picked up and potentially distorted over the phone's transmitter or mic.

I didn’t have to do anything below (but I did do #4), and everything works fine.

Basically the following applies:

https://forums.redflagdeals.com/freepho ... #p27894753

"I call tons of banks, doctors, hospitals, lawyers, stores, etc. I never have any issues. And there's tons of people on RFD using Obihai ATAs with FPL as well.
And I've installed an OBi202 for my parents. Some of my friends also use OBi200 ATAs. If this were a common issue, people would be complaining to me quite frequently.

And I don't have to use Inband as described below either. The only time I've seen someone have to change DTMF settings was for an alarm system.

I'm modifying what was originally written here by OBiSupport: https://www.obitalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=577.20
By the way RX gain is volume level from the phone's mic to the OBihai ATA.

"There are a few places where a DTMF tone can get lost or go undetected. Here are a few things to try if you are having issues getting DTMF tones to a far-end peer (VoIP and/or PSTN).

1. Change the DTMF transmit method to in-band.
Service Providers > ITSP Profile X > General > DTMFMethod = InBand

2. Increase the audio gain setting for audio (DTMF) generated by the phone attached to the OBi PHONE port.
Physical Interfaces > PHONE Port (1 and 2) > Port Settings > ChannelRxGain = 0
The "0" recommendation is arbitrary. Find a setting that works for your environment. Setting this too high could result in the OBi caller hearing their echo and/or the far end experiencing audio cut-out or the OBi caller being just too plain loud.
Note: Only applicable to DTMF tones when "InBand" signalling is invoked.

3. Increase the DTMF playback level on the Phone port(s)
Physical Interfaces > Phone Port (1 and 2) > Port Settings > DTMFPlaybackLevel = -7
The -7 recommendation is arbitrary. Find a setting that works for your environment."

4. Some users have reported switching the ethernet port to full duplex fixes static noise (this probably isn't contributing to your issue, but you might want to check). Force your Obihai ATA to use 100Mbit Full duplex by doing the following:

Dial *** 0
Enter option 27 and press #
Press 1 to set a new value
Enter a value of 1
Press 1 to confirm/save
Hang up
Your ATA should reboot at this point.

5. I would do this: make a free call to
416-342-9562

a. Call 416-342-9562
b. Say something.
c. Press # to end recording.
d. Press 2 for DTMF tone test.
e. Press 1234567890*# to ensure all tones work
Visit http://thetestcall.blogspot.ca/

If #5 works, then DTMF is working as intended.
