Freephoneline incoming calls not going to office phone

Post by AmisParcGatineau »

Hi,

I recently registered with Freephoneline. I set it up for use with my office phone via an ObiHai OBI 202 device.

I can make calls, but I cannot answer incoming calls. The desktop app rings, but my phone doesn't, and when I pick up I get the regular dial tone.

Also, I just received a call and I was not able to answer with my office phone (I just heard the regular dialtone), so I let it ring, but it never went to voice mail (even though the number of rings before going to voicemail is set to 4), so I tried to disconnect using both the Reject button on the popup and the End Call button in the Freephoneline app, neither worked and it is still ringing (I'm guessing I'll have to restart my computer so I can use my speaker again without hearing it).

Any ideas on why incoming calls don't go to my office phone?

Any help will be much appreciated!

Slight update: it turns out that the continuous ringing doesn't necessarily mean that the call doesn't go to voicemail. It's just that on my end the sound never stops until I close the app.

Also, in some cases, when people call me, they dial and then nothing happens for a really long time before the call is actually placed (long enough for most people to hang up thinking nothing's going to happen)....don't know if the cause could be the same as for the problem with me not being able to answer incoming calls...

Please note that only one registration per FPL account is allowed at any time.
When there are multiple devices/softphones using the same account, only the most recent registration is valid. The previous device will lose registration and incoming calls will not work on it.
Registration is required for incoming calls but not for outgoing calls.

Additionally, more than 5 registration attempts attempts within 5 minutes can result in a temporary IP ban from the FPL server being used.
From https://community.freepbx.org/t/trunk-s ... ca/22479/8
"As May 2013, our servers will rate limit REGISTER requests to a maximum of 10 requests per 5 minutes. Each authentication round usually consumes 2 requests (digest auth), so it is a fair number given our guidelines. Also, it does not affect INVITES (which are also authenticated)...

This rate limit is applied per IP address as our service is tailored to residential Canadian users (ADSL/Cable)."

If you're temporarily IP banned, you could then try switching ProxyServer to a different FPL server than the one you were previously using (voip.freephoneline.ca, voip2.freephoneline.ca, or voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060), unless you need to use voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 because you have SIP ALG forced on in your router. The purpose of voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 is to circumvent SIP ALG features in routers. Or you can disable FPL SIP registration in all devices (turn off your ATA; disable the app) and wait several hours until the temporary ban clears.

With respect to temporary IP bans, these 3 timers are important and should be set properly:

https://support.freephoneline.ca/hc/en- ... redentials

i) Registration Interval:3600 seconds (1 hour)

ii) Registration Expiry: 3600 seconds (1 hour)

iii) Failed Registration Re-Try Interval: 120 seconds

If you properly followed this PDF guide for your OBi202, your timers are set properly: http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 805#p73839.

Refer to this PDF guide to setup your ATA properly: http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18805.

Alternatively, you can use Follow Me after logging in at https://www.freephoneline.ca/followMeSettings.
However, you will lose the capacity to the have the ATA filter telemarketing calls when using Follow Me.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm not sure what you mean by registration. Is this something done automatically with the OBI setup or do I have to register the phone somewhere in my Freephoneline account (I don't see anything anywhere).

I've used the PDF you mentioned in parts (because my configuration is based on someone else's configuration), and I'm guessing the problem comes from the one major thing I did not do, which is buy another router and switch my Bell Hub 1000 to bridge mode.

Click https://www.voipmechanic.com/sip-call-example.htm for an explanation.

In order for any SIP service (FPL) to work for incoming calls, an ATA, IP Phone, or softphone app must register using your SIP credentials (username and password), which are found after logging in at https://www.freephoneline.ca/showSipSettings, with FPL's server.

Please note that only one registration per FPL account is allowed at any time.

a) Dial ***1. Enter the IP address you hear into a web browser
b) Navigate to Status-->System Status-->SP(FPL) Service Status-->Status

You should see "Status Registered"

With Freephoneline, because the registration period is 3600s or 1 hour, you may see "registered" even when the ATA is not really registered.
For example, if you're using FPL's desktop application and run it, then the desktop application registers your FPL account. Your ATA then, in turn, loses registration (despite FPL's status still showing "registered" in the ATA, it won't try to update until 1hr). Your ATA will no longer receive incoming calls because it's not registered while your desktop app is. You can't have your ATA and FPL's desktop app simultaneously registered with a single Freephoneline account. Only the most recent registration is valid. It's one (the ATA) or the other (the FPL desktop app).

When there are multiple devices/softphones using the same account, only the most recent registration is valid. The previous device will lose registration and incoming calls will not work on it.
Registration is required for incoming calls but not for outgoing calls.

So you can't have a desktop app ring for incoming calls and have your ATA work properly for incoming calls at the exact same time using the same FPL account. You must choose one or the other. Only the most recent device or softphone registration is valid. You also can't share your FPL SIP credentials with other people. It simply won't work for incoming calls if registrations are being attempted with multiple devices using the same FPL account.
because my configuration is based on someone else's configuration
I suggest configuring FPL properly using the PDF guide: http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18805. And no, the Bell Hub should still work, in particular if you're using voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 and configuring your ATA properly using the PDF guide. If you’re using settings from a blog or from someone else, chances are the settings are not correct for FPL.

If you want your ATA to work properly for incoming calls, disable/exit/stop the FPL desktop app (and anything else using your FPL SIP credentials other than your ATA), and then reboot the ATA (which will force the ATA to attempt to register with FPL again). Stop using the desktop app with the same FPL account that you're using the ATA with.

I removed the app and unplugged/replugged the OBI202 and everything seems to be working fine, now.

Thanks

You're welcome!
