Freephoneline stopped working

Postby McGarnigle » 06/11/2018

I opened the app today to check for any voicemails, but couldn't get through. Couldn't make any other calls either. Tried phoning the voicemail number from my cell. Recording asked for my account #. (?) Don't know what that is. I tried calling my FPL # from cell, Just silence for about 30 secs, then a recording that the number was unavailable. I tried restarting the App. I tried running the Test Connection. It said it timed out, and said possible reasons were the firewall or router were blocking. I checked, but could find nothing amiss. I made sure Java was enabled. I followed the procedure for uninstalling, checking for any remaining FPL files, then reinstalling the App. I tried again, and thought I had succeeded, because I got it to place a call to and from my cell, although I THINK it was just the notification of the call and no actual voice connection after picking up Have not been able to place or receive any more calls. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but the big Windows 10 version 1803, and KB4287903 updates were installed since I was last able to use the Freephoneline. Can anyone help??

That test is useless since it fails even when everything is working properly.

because I got it to place a call to and from my cell

How are you placing outbound calls from FPL using your cellphone if you're using the desktop app?

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but the big Windows 10 version 1803, and KB4287903 updates were installed since I was last able to use the Freephoneline.

I always run the latest official version of Windows 10 64 bit edition on multiple computers. Freephoneline desktop app works perfectly fine for me.

Can anyone help?

I don’t have any other ideas beyond the information listed in that specific post, which should be followed, step by step from top to bottom, especially steps i to iv towards the bottom of the post.
Step iii is not related to your specific issue, but it's good advice, in general.

Thanks very much for your reply. What happened is: I found some other problems with my PC besides the FPL one, so realized the culprit really was the Windows update. I went ahead and "Restored To a Previous Build". After that was complete I tried to launch the FPL desktop app, but it just popped an error message that The Java Runtime Enviroment was not found, and to downoad it or browse for it. I found a file already on my computer, but would not let me install it. I went to Start menu and found there was an update available for Java, but when I tried to update, it gave an error message that The Destination Folder Is Not Empty. Researching online made me think this was going to be a nightmare to try and fix. I decided to see if I could do a System Restore (but was not holding my breath, because in the past I found System Restore rarely worked). This time I didn't even get a chance to try because I had ZERO Restore points somehow! I then decided to do a full hard drive restore from a Macrium Reflect backup I had done before that new Windows build install. That went OK, and all my problems went away, including FPL. BUT...the problem now is, as I anticipated, Windows Update started trying to install the offending build again, and I know it will do so sooner than later, and I will almost certainly be back where my troubles began. At that point I guess all I can do is try that sfc/scannow, and maybe do my backup restore again and try downloading the new Windows build directly from the catalog, unless you have something more to add?

Not really.

Today is Microsoft Patch Tuesday: https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/hel ... -kb4284835.

In turn, I've updated three different PCs to Windows 10 64 bit 1803 (OS Build 17134.112) today. The Freephoneline desktop app works on all of them (except for "Test Connection", of course).

Ok, what I have done so far, is stop Windows Updates by setting my connection as metered. I then went online to Microsoft, and found what other updates have been issued for my Windows build (1709) and found one and downloaded it from the Microsoft update catalog, and installed it. I will just keep with 1709 until they stop issuing patches for it. I have no idea how long that will be.
