Weird problem when getting calls from cellphones - SPA2102

Postby joeschmoe » 12/31/2018

Hi,
I got a SPA2102 configured according to the instructions posted on the forum, and it kinda works except when people call me on their cell phones. The phone ring, I answer there's no audio on the other side and it goes to fast busy right away (and 'phone' light on the spa2102 blinks a few times before it goes back to solid). I can call the caller back and it will work, but for some reason them calling me won't work. I am on a bridged CGN3 rogers modem so maybe that's got something to do with it (but again, modem is in bridge mode and I'm using a DDwrt-based router).

Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix it? (I am using voip4 port 6060 already, btw)

Follow the steps from this link, step by step (1 to 13):
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/freephon ... #p26808549

If the issue is with a sepecific cellular number only, as opposed to normal landlines, open a ticket and provide them with the number.

By the way, if the ATA loses registration for any reason, incoming calls won't work on it. Note that only one registration per FPL account is allowed at any time. When there are multiple devices/softphones using the same account, only the most recent registration is valid. The previous device will lose registration. This is especially important to consider if someone else is using your SIP credentials (username and password) that are found after logging in at https://www.freephoneline.ca/showSipSettings (or if you're trying to register your FPL account with a smartphone SIP app or with another device). Registration is required for incoming calls. It is not required for outgoing calls. If you simply want to make outgoing calls using your FPL number, configure, but don't register the account, on the SIP app being used. This is also important to consider if you're using Freephoneline's desktop application (don't have it running while using your ATA with the same FPL account). Additionally, keep in mind that if someone else is also attempting to register the same SIP credentials on another device where you live, too many registration attempts can result in a temporary IP ban. Always check registration status in the ATA and also your SIP status after logging in at the above link. If you see a device listed under SIP User Agent that you don't recognize, you've either been hacked or someone else is using your Freephoneline SIP username and SIP Password.

This didn't really help and the ATA still appears to literally reset (there's a click and red light blinks for a bit until going back to green) when a call from a cellphone comes in (note that calls via FPL or other VOIP systems work just fine)

I'm starting to wonder about the power adapter - it is not an original linksys one, and while it has 5V, it only has 1A (I think the original Linksys adapters are 5V 2A) - could that be related? And if so, why would VOIP calls work ok?

From googling around, this is very similar to what I'm experiencing:
https://community.acanac.com/acanac/vie ... 7394%C2%A0
Just did a quick test and indeed the ATA does not reboot if I answer in the 'silent periods' between rings, but reboots if I answer during the ringing. Any settings to try adjusting?

That's good that you discovered the problem. To me, this would fall under a hardware issue/defect. You can try getting a new power supply and generally avoiding cheap counterfeit products on eBay and Kijiji (I'm not stating that your product is counterfeit, but the SPA2102 was discontinued in 2012; listings making claims that a brand new product is being sold are suspect, especially if any of those ATAs are sourced from China). I can't speak for others, but I'm not going to bother trying to create workarounds for hardware issues since another problem could occur or worsen. One thing to check though is to ensure that you're not connecting the ATA to any phone jack in a house where power from the Telco's line is still running through the phone jack. If power is still running through the phone jacks, you run the risk of frying your ATA. If you attach an ATA to existing phone jacks in a house, the telco's line needs to be disconnected at the demarc.

My advice is to either get a new ATA or try a new power supply. If you need to buy a new power supply, depending on the amount of money required, I would lean towards using that money to buy a new ATA instead when a discount or sale appears.

"The PAP/SPA family of ATAs were an industry standard for many years until Linksys EOL'd them in 2012. Did you know that not only were Sipura and Obihai ATAs designed by the same engineers, those engineers also invented the ATA at Komodo technology 15+ years ago? OBi ATAs are really the latest versions of the PAP/SPA ATAs - granted, with more/better call routing features, better hardware, and better audio quality."

Obihai OBi200 and OBi202 ATAs are sold at Newegg Canada and occasionally go on sale a few times each year. AcroVoice is the only other authorized Obihai retailer in Canada and sells OBi302 ATAs, which don't support Google Voice. OBi300 also does not, officially, support Google Voice and can probably be obtained from Acrovoice if you ask them. I'm not going to answer questions about Google Voice on these forums, but the difference is the 300 series doesn't officially support Google Voice while the 200 series does. These are the most powerful ATAs intended for regular residential purposes due to their powerful call routing features, which other ATAs lack. However, Obihai does not have a good reputation for customer support and has angered the online community, in particular at dslreports, by discontinuing official firmware development for the older OBi100 and OBi110 series ATAs: https://www.obitalk.com/info/faq/About- ... nouncement. Firmware updates aren't required for use with Freephoneline since these Obihai OBi100 and OBi110 series ATAs work fine with Freephoneline using existing firmware.
