I have 3 phone numbers with FreePhoneLine. I am using 2 different HT-502A v2.0A's.

I was able to receive calls last night but as of this morning, I am unable to send or receive calls on any of the numbers. I logged into the remote UIs and all of the lines show Not Registered. I can login to the accounts but the SIP status is disconnected. I haven't changed anything since yesterday. Any suggestions? Thank you so much

I'm very busy right now, but check your registration timers (60 minutes) against this PDF guide: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16336
SIP Registration Failure Retry Wait Time should be 120 seconds.

Too many registration attempts within a short period can result in a temporary IP ban.

Try voip2.freephoneline.ca or voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060.

Too many registration attempts can result in a temporary IP ban with the server you're attempting to register with. Always check registration status in the ATA and also your SIP status after logging in at https://www.freephoneline.ca/showSipSettings. If you see a device listed under SIP User Agent that you don't recognize, you've either been hacked or someone else is using your Freephoneline SIP username and SIP Password.

Each time you reboot the ATA, it's attempting to register with Freephoneline again. If you attempt more than 10 registrations in 5 minutes (this is why the registration interval is important),
you may end up being temporarily IP banned by the specific FPL server the ATA (and/or desktop app) was sending
registration requests to. If you're temporarily IP banned, you could then try switching ProxyServer to a different FPL server than the one you were previously using (voip.freephoneline.ca, voip2.freephoneline.ca, or voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060), unless you need to use voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 because you have SIP ALG forced on in your router. The purpose of
voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 is to circumvent buggy SIP ALG features in routers.

https://community.freepbx.org/t/trunk-s ... ca/22479/8
"As May 2013, our servers will rate limit REGISTER requests to a maximum of 10 requests per 5 minutes. Each authentication round usually consumes 2 requests (digest auth), so it is a fair number given our guidelines. Also, it does not affect INVITES (which are also authenticated)…

This rate limit is applied per IP address as our service is tailored to residential Canadian users (ADSL/Cable)."

Currently, there is an intermittent issue involving voip.freephoneline.ca and incoming calls, so I would avoid testing using that server for now.

i) For reference, your latest ATA firmware is located at http://firmware.grandstream.com/Release ... 0.16.2.zip
Firmware upgrade guide can be found at http://www.grandstream.com/sites/defaul ... _Guide.pdf
I will not be held responsible for failed firmware upgrades.

ii) Check light patterns on the ATA. Refer to pages 12 to 13 of the manual: http://www.grandstream.com/sites/defaul ... manual.pdf.

If your ATAs can't reach the internet, SIP settings and everything else are pretty much pointless.

a) First, use voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 for primary SIP Server to help rule out potential SIP ALG issues

b) Change Prefer Primary SIP Server to No

c) delete outbound proxy
Freephoneline doesn't proxy outbound audio. There's no need to specify outbound proxy

d) I know you said you deleted it for security, but login at https://www.freephoneline.ca/showSipSettings and carefully copy and paste (make sure you're not pasting extra spaces, accidentally . . . doublecheck) SIP User ID

e) same as step d for authenticate password (SIP Password). Basically, I want you to double check that you haven't accidentally added an extra space or had your browser or some other program automatically fill your password in incorrectly

f) Enter your name

g) Transfer on conference hangup should be set to Yes, apparently . . . but that's not your problem

And if there's more info below your cutoff screenshot, obviously I can't see below what you've provided.

1) What brand and model modem are you using?

2) What brand and model router are you using?

3) Are you able to ping voip4.freephoneline.ca? Actually . . . download winmtr (if you have a PC): https://sourceforge.net/projects/winmtr/
Test to voip4.freephoneline.ca about 100 times.

Then select the "copy text to clipboard" button. Then paste that info here. Delete the first hop that shows your real WAN IP address before posting.

If I could get a syslog from the ATA, that might provided more useful information, but as I've never tried to generate syslog from a Grandstream device, I'm reluctant to bother you about it. If you're interested, visit http://www.grandstream.com/support/faq/troubleshooting (I would want Send SIP Log enabled in the ATA if you've done this before. If you haven't, forget about about generating syslog).

If the ATAs can't reach any of the servers at all, you may be experiencing a DNS issue. Possibly specifying google dns servers (or other dns servers) in the ATA may help.

Sorry, I have no clue why I found older firmware yesterday. Grandstream's site does list http://firmware.grandstream.com/Release ... 0.16.2.zip as being the latest. I'll edit my post in case others look for information in this thread.

a) You need to specify "voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060" (without the quotation marks) for primary SIP Server. You're missing the colon followed by 6060.

b) Local SIP port is different and separate from the proxy server port, by the way. 6060 is not required for local sip port. Instead 6060 is required in the primary SIP Server field, since 6060 is the proxy server port for voip4.freephoneline.ca and not the default proxy server port, 5060. You can leave local sip port at 5060 (default). Actually, for security, I would change that to a random number between 30000 and 60000 to help thwart SIP scanners, but the fact that you have "use random port" enabled effectively does something similar anyway.

b) Ensure that you delete outbound proxy.
Freephoneline doesn't proxy outbound audio. There's no need to specify outbound proxy at all.

c) For security, I would enable "Allow Incoming SIP Messages from SIP Proxy only" to Yes, but it's up to you. And that's not the source of the registration issue.

d) With respect to codec choices, FPL only supports G.711u (PCMU) and G.729a, but that's not related to registration issues either.

e) Change Outgoing Call Without Registration to Yes. I just want to do this for testing purposes. Registration is not required for outbound calls. Registration is only for inbound calls. So change that setting. With that setting disabled, when registration fails, outbound calls won't work either.

save settings

I have SmartRG SR515ac modem/router

f) Disable SIP ALG in SR515ac. Refer to screenshot on page 33 from https://www.lmi.net/wp-content/uploads/ ... l_v3_5.pdf.
The setting is found under "Network Address Translation Settings". Save settings.

To understand why SIP ALG often causes horrible problems, please visit https://www.voip-info.org/routers-sip-alg/ (scroll down to the section on SIP ALG problems).

g) Disconnect all ATAs except the one you are currently testing. Reboot SR515ac. Wait for it to be fully up and running first. Then reboot ATA.

h) If you still can't register, perform PPPoE login using your ATA. In your ATA, navigate to Basic Settings-->IP Address-->Use PPPoE.
You will need your PPPoE username and password from your ISP. Doing this will allow you to bypass any potential buggy router features, including SIP ALG that can mangle SIP headers and make registration fail.

i) Even if you can't register, you should be able to make an outbound call provided SIP username and SIP password have been entered correctly due to step e. Test an outbound call. Do you hear anything? Do you hear an error message?

Otherwise, I'm out of suggestions. WinMTR looks fine.

Also, note that only one registration per FPL account is allowed at any time. When there are multiple devices/softphones using the same account, only the most recent registration is valid. The previous device will lose registration and incoming calls will not work on it.

Another thing to check is whether your FPL SIP credentials work. I would test on a decent smartphone SIP application, such as Acrobits Groundwire with cellular data (to check to see if my router or residential service provider is the issue) and then on Wi-Fi. You can also test using the FPL desktop application or Bria Solo Free on Windows.

Re: Not Registered

Postby pirroncello » 04/09/2020

I have done all the steps you indicated except the PPPoE as it would be too difficult on my end.

Just a couple things I noticed.

1. I have 2 ATA units and 3 different accounts
2. They all work from an SIP program on my phone to test
3. I cannot make an outgoing call regardless of the SIP registration on outbound setting
4. My brother has the exact same box as me HT-502 v2.0 and has been having the exact same issue.
i) He has his own account
ii) We are both on Teksavvy, but using different routers
5. After having the boxes sit for a few hours, they sometimes Register and then un-register after a few more hours or a reboot of anything
6. I used a WGA660N adapter and connected the box to my phone's hotspot (trying to be creative) and still will not register.

I assume it has something to do with this model and the service. Anything else anyone can think of to try?

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=19314&p=75694#p75693

With respect to also performing PPPoE in the ATA . . .

"Bridge PPPoE Frames Between WAN and LAN Ports" is used to allow other devices (on your LAN) connected to your router to establish PPoE logins that allow traffic to pass through your router's NAT firewall. Enabling that feature is required if you're doing a PPoE login with your ATA.

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=19314&p=75694#p75693 (take a look at this post). With respect to that topic, registration is a requirement for incoming calls; registration is not required for outgoing calls.

pirroncello wrote:I assume it has something to do with this model

Possibly something involving Smart515ac, especially if a firmware update has been pushed to it recently by the ISP
I've assisted a number of users with bypassing SmartRG router features before. For example, viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15926&p=75818&p75810#p75810.
Unfortunately, in most cases, I have not been able to help resolve people's issues without completely bypassing the router features in SmartRG devices.
When DSL is involved, bypassing router features completely in a modem/router combo often requires performing PPPoE using your own router or in the SIP device.

Although free technical support isn't offered for FPL, you can submit a ticket and ask whether anything's changed on their end, after April 5th, that would cause your issue: https://support.fongo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. I doubt that it has since all Fongo Home Phone users are using Grandstream ATAs, including older models, such as yours. I would have expected a flood of complaints in the Fongo Home Phone forum if that were the case.

I just figured it out!

The DNS was using Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and that was the issue. Changed to Google (8.8.8.8) and that worked.

Thanks for your help and hope this helps someone else in the future.

I had considered asking about DNS earlier (back when I was wondering whether your ATA was even connecting to the internet properly and could reach voip4.freephoneline.ca), but your WinMTR results threw me off.
The last hop from it reaches 162.213.111.21, which is voip4.freephoneline.ca. Your results showed low pings and minimal jitter. And then DNS slipped my mind.

Anyway, I'm glad the service is working for you again. Thank you for letting me know.

Have a great weekend!

Thanks for your help. DNS was an afterthought too on my end.

I was looking at getting an OBi302 when I thought it was my HT502. I notice you have a OBI202 and I read up on the differences between the two. Voice quality is fine on our HT502's and Faxs work well also. Any feature/benefit you can see on the Polycom products that I could be missing out on? Trust your opinion. Thanks

If everything is working fine for you, I don't recommend buying anything.

But if you're interested, visit https://forums.redflagdeals.com/newegg- ... #p28405592 for more general info.

Obihai ATAs are the most powerful ATAs intended for residential usage due to their powerful call routing abilities.
I am able to route known, incoming telemarketing calls elsewhere.
I can make call forwarding work with an Obihai ATA instead of having the call drop directly to voicemail, by disabling a setting called X_Use302ToCallForward. Other ATAs can't bridge calls together, which is required when forwarding calls using Freephoneline.
Without an Obihai ATA, I would be unable to use Nomorobo with Freephoneline: https://www.nomorobo.com/.
I can setup all three Freephoneline proxy servers for failover (if one server goes down, the ATA will register with another FPL proxy server).
Without an Obihai ATA, I wouldn't be able to call into it using my cellphone and access all service providers that are provisioned on it, so that I can make outbound calls using any of those services. I can also allow my household members to do the same thing using their own PINs.
The fact that an OBi200/202 supports up to 4 sip trunks and 8 voice gateways means I don't have to use a third party PBX (for my usage 4 trunks and 8 gateways are fine). Using third party PBX services introduces an additional point of failure. I am able to route and transfer calls between any of my services provisioned on the ATA.
You can create your own personal whitelists or blacklists.
You can record calls on your computer using an Obihai ATA.
I would recommend going through the PDF guide located at viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18805#p73839 to see all the things you can do with FPL using an OBi2xx (or 3xx series) ATA.

OBi200/202 had always been available at Newegg Canada: for example, https://www.newegg.ca/polycom-2200-4952 ... 6833617015.
But now they only seem to be listed for sale by third party sellers at Newegg Canada. So either Newegg Canada stopped carrying these ATAs completely, or they're sold out.

Polycom has acquired Obihai (Polycom's parent company is Platronics; I guess Platronics and Polycom have combined and are branded "Poly" now), and there's no significant difference from the previous OBi2xx ATAs, other than the colour of the casing and the Polycom logo. Newegg Canada used to have sales on these ATAs, periodically. $69.99 is the normal (non-sale) pricing for the OBi200. OBI202s were typically around $99, normally (non-sale) from Newegg Canada.

Using official firmware, the OBi200/202/212 series ATAs support Google Voice while the OBi30x series ATAs do not, unless you use hacked firmware (see viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18805&p=76546#p75081), which I won't be answering questions about on these forums. Using hacked firmware likely voids the product warranty in the event Obihai can determine you're not using official firmware.
Getting a Google Voice number requires a non-VoIP U.S. landline or U.S.cellular phone number in addition to a U.S. IP address. Google Voice numbers are not required for calling out though (a Google Voice account is); they are required for incoming calls only. Getting a Google Voice account requires a U.S. IP address. Moreover, Google Voice numbers are U.S. numbers, so if you want a Canadian phone number you'll need to use Freephoneline. That's the limit to what I'm willing to discuss about Google Voice. As these forums are for Freephoneline users, I won't be discussing anything further involving Google Voice setup or support here.

Acrovoice is the only other authorized Obihai dealer in Canada (as far as I know), and they stopped selling the OBi2xx series because Newegg Canada kept undercutting Acrovoice's pricing during Newegg's sales. Perhaps that will change now since Newegg Canada doesn't appear to have any in stock (or is no longer carrying them). Acrovoice will sell the OBi3xx series if you contact them. They may also sell the OBi2xx series if you contact them and ask: https://www.acrovoice.ca/obistore/.

To see Canadian authorized Obihai retailers, visit http://www.obihai.com/intlsellers.

The importance of authorized dealers is that Obihai won't honour the warranty of its products sold elsewhere in Canada. You would need to produce a receipt from either Newegg Canada (must be both shipped and sold by Newegg Canada and not a third party seller) or Acrovoice for warranty coverage. Keep in mind that Obihai requires the user to pay to ship the product to Obihai in California in the event of a hardware issue covered under warranty. Obihai pays for the return shipping. The limited hardware warranty period is 1 year.

The PDF guide listed at viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18805#p73839 also works for the OBi30x series ATAs, provided the ATA has not been locked to an Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP). The Obihai ATAs sold by Acrovoice should come unlocked. The 3XX series was intended to be sold by VoIP service providers directly. Otherwise, the main difference is that the OBi3xx series ATAs do not, officially (using official firmware), support Google Voice, whereas the OBi2xx series ATAs do. If you don't care about Google Voice or about using official firmware, the OBi3xx series ATAs may make more sense, depending on pricing.

The issue with Obihai is that they charge $10 USD for firmware updates after the 1 year warranty period is over (although there's been no need for me to update anyway, especially for Freephoneline). They hide (or basically stick the firmware behind a paywall) new firmware updates from non-paying users (after 1 year). They also charge for technical support after 1 year. Their support policies are very annoying, in my opinion, but the devices themselves are pretty powerful, in particular for residential usage.

By the way, the engineering team that designed the Linksys PAP ATA series left and eventually started designing Obihai ATAs. They are the true successors of the PAP series ATAs and not the newer Cisco SPA series.

Pianoguy wrote:The PAP/SPA family of ATAs were an industry standard for many years until Linksys EOL'd them in 2012. Did you know that not only were Sipura and Obihai ATAs designed by the same engineers, those engineers also invented the ATA at Komodo technology 15+ years ago? OBi ATAs are really the latest versions of the PAP/SPA ATAs - granted, with more/better call routing features, better hardware, and better audio quality - but the hundreds of thousands of people who used PAP/SPA ATAs before Obihai went on the market would likely not call a genuine PAP/SPA garbage (with the possible exception of the SPA3xxx).

Anyway, I hope you find this information useful.

Re: [Resolved] Not Registered

Here's some general information on routers, since many people don't know what features to look for when buying routers for SIP services, such as FPL, in the event you're also interested.

Typically, for VoIP SIP services, especially for freephoneline, you want

1) a router that does not have a full cone NAT,

Visit https://www.think-like-a-computer.com/2 ... es-of-nat/.
Mango from the Obitalk.com forums writes,
“Use a restricted cone NAT router, and do not use port forwarding or DMZ. Restricted cone NAT will only permit
inbound traffic from the service provider you're registered to. If you have a full cone NAT router, it will allow traffic
from any source. This is probably not what you intend.
If you have a Windows computer, you can test your router using the utility here:
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,22292023. To run it, use stun stun.ekiga.net from a command prompt.”
Essentially, you download the stun-test.zip file; extract the stun.exe file from within the zip file to an easily
accessible location; use an elevated command prompt (visit
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-ru ... inistrator); change directory (cd) to the
directory or location where you extracted stun.exe (visit
http://www.digitalcitizen.life/command- ... c-commands); and type “stun stun.ekiga.net” without
the quotation marks followed by the enter/return button on your keyboard.
Asus routers, at the time of this writing, produce port restricted cone NAT routers, for example and are fine,
provided you’re using one with Asuswrt-Merlin, third party firmware installed.

2) a router that lets you disable SIP ALG if it's buggy,

To understand why SIP ALG often causes horrible problems, please visit
https://www.voip-info.org/routers-sip-alg/ (scroll down to the section on SIP ALG problems).

If you're dealing with a modem/router combo issued by an ISP or a router with SIP ALG forced on, you may have
to use voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 for the Proxy Server. The purpose of voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 is to circumvent
faulty SIP ALG features in routers.

3) a router that allows you to set QoS or assign highest priority to your ATA or IP Phone over all other devices on your LAN (local area network),

For a very general description of what QoS can do for you, visit https://www.voipmechanic.com/qos-for-voip.htm.
The basic idea is if you're torrenting or have a bunch of other computers, smartphones, tablets, etc. downloading and uploading (hogging all your available bandwidth), you don't want
your ATA not to have access to enough bandwidth to make or receive calls properly. So QoS or a Bandwidth Monitor feature (which is just another form of QoS) is a really good idea for VoIP users.

I often get an occasional relative complaining to me, "Hey my calls sound choppy." And then when I go visit, some kids are playing MMOs on a computer, while another person is downloading a huge file,
and another person is backing up files to a cloud service all at the same time someone else is trying to talk on the phone. All those devices, without QoS enabled, are fighting over available bandwidth along with the ATA.

and 4) A router that lets you adjust both Unreplied and Assured UDP timeouts.

Thanks to Mango, many of us now understand that in order for ATAs to remain registered and working properly with a VoIP SIP provider like Freephoneline, in particular after power failures, the following conditions must be met:

UDP Unreplied Timeout (in your router) < NAT Keep-alive Interval (in your ATA; for Obihai ATAs this is X_KeepAliveExpires) < UDP Assured Timeout (in your router) < SIP Registration Failure Retry Wait Time (or RegisterRetryInterval in Obihai ATAs)

“<“ means less than.

When a modem leases a new IP address, a problem can arise where prior associations using the old IP address are maintained in the router. When the ATA attempts to communicate using the old IP address, the response is unreplied, and then if the UDP Unreplied timeout is greater than the Keep Alive Interval (and UDP Unreplied timeout is often set to 30 by default in consumer routers) a problem arises where the corrupted connection persists. If UDP Unreplied timeout is, for example, 17, and the NAT Keep Alive Interval is 20, then the corrupted connection will timeout or close. A new connection will be created, and everything will work fine.

Another problem can occur when the Keep-Alive interval is greater than UDP Assured Timeout (often 180 by default in consumer routers): the NAT hole will close due to the ATA not communicating frequently enough with the SIP server. In turn, incoming calls may, intermittently, not reach the ATA. Again, X_Keepalives expires is supposed to be 20 with FPL.

(the above settings are making reference to those in Obihai ATAs)

Getting access to both UDP Unreplied Timeout and UDP Assured Timeout settings in consumer routers may be difficult, if not impossible. Asuswrt-Merlin (I would avoid any model below/less powerful than an RT-AC68U), third party firmware for Asus routers, does offer easy access to these two settings, which are found under General–>Tools-->Other settings. My understanding is that third party Tomato firmware has these two settings as well. So if your router supports Tomato firmware, that may be another option. Note that I will not be held accountable any damage resulting from failed firmware updates. Apparently, Mikrotik routers also allow users to change both Assured and Unreplied UDP timeout settings as well: https://forums.redflagdeals.com/recomme ... #p28056619.

The keep alive interval for FPL is 20. The SIP Registration Failure Retry Wait Time is 120. I use 17 for UDP Unreplied Timeout and 117 for UDP Assured Timeout.

ISPs do not issue customers routers that can do all four things I just listed. Typically it's far better to have your own router with strong QoS functions and a restricted cone NAT firewall,
disable whatever SIP ALG feature is enabled in the router, and stick whatever modem/router combo your ISP gives you into bridge mode. For Bell Hubs, visit http://forums.redflagdeals.com/please-s ... r-1993629/. For Rogers, visit https://www.rogers.com/customer/support ... ridgemodem.
