Encryption

Post by balooba »

Problem with Voip is confidentiality. anyone with a sniffer or so can ear and record your call; we dont have this problem with landlines.

So, switching to Voip like FPL in remplacement of landline is a problem.

Will you offer option to encryption somehow soon?

Sorry, I completely missed responding to this the other day when I first saw it.
To answer your question, no we currently do not encrypt our traffic. The cost to implement a system like this would be very very high and would not allow us to offer the service for free, let alone an ultra low price. Last I had heard, not even Vonage was offering encrypted traffic.
Due to the way the signalling is done with the VOIP packets - which are very small packets to begin with - the ods of someone being able to salvage a whole conversation would take extreme amounts of effort. Our servers themselves are secure though, so this keeps the "signature" of the VOIP call protected.
In laymans terms, using VOIP is probably more secure than your house is. You would also be much more likely to have your conversations heard on an older cordless phone because anyone with a scanner can listen to you. VOIP requires so much effort to sniff that no one would attempt it unless they have an incredibly strong reason to target you.
