which wireless router do you suggest for good VoIP support?

Hey guys,

I currently have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router for about 5 years now and I was considering to a completely new wireless router - for good VoIP support and for QoS. I've once flashed my WRT54G wireless router with the DD-WRT firmware, but the firmware had failed to do its purpose - even though I had followed the proper procedures. Like, whenever I am downloading a file through bittorrent on one computer and attempted to surf the internet from another computer, my router was completely occupied/busy. The only way to stop this is to power cycle my router.

As a result, I've reverted back to the VxWorks firmware and things have since been smooth sailing. Now the reason that I had choosed FreePhoneLine.ca is getting my own phone number no matter where I live. So far the service is great. Now, I'm considering upgrading my wireless router.

I've looked at the D-link DIR-655 wireless router and it has some very good support for VoIP. You can view the information here: http://www.dlink.ca/products/?pid=530

Apart from that particular router, which other suggestions you could give to me?

The D-link DIR-655 is not a good router when it comes to SIP VOIP. It cannot even be flashed to DD-WRT. (I am not sure why the VX-Works firmware was better for you, certainly was not to me). A Cisco E2000 is a better choice. The firmware is decent. Chipset is well known to developers also.

As for the bit torrent problem, limite to 50 connections, and 2 uploads per torrent. Amazing how the overall throughput will improve, and the torrents might get quicker also.

The one that we offer (and that i would suggest) is if your ISP allows you to have your own modem, would be to get the Thomson TG784. It is a modem with build in wireless network and has two SIP phone jacks on it. It would allow you to program multiple numbers in it. (this is the modem we offer with our home phone bundle)

Well, I normally rely on my Rogers Internet service (although I'm proposing to switch to Distributel soon because of the unlimited bandwidth feature - technically I don't have to worry about download caps), but can the Thomson TG784 "act" as a home gateway (a plain-old wireless router)? In addition (a bit off-topic, but), I'm looking on getting a dedicated ATA device (although that was mention on a thread that I created earlier a while back).

I use Distributel for last 5 or 6 years same fix price umlimited bandwith and much cheaper compare to Rogers

I use FPL the quatily is great with Linksys ATA device

Thanks for your suggestions. I found out that my router version for my WRT54G is version 6. That router only has a limited amount of RAM (about 8MB) along with flash memory (about 2MB for the particular version of my router).

I'm currently pursuing options on getting the WRT54GL. The "L" supports third-party Linux-based firmware.

Ok, that makes all the difference. I have heard of issues using DD WRT with only 8 megs of ram. The router is only good for an access point stability wise. You do not need an L version of a WRT54G, just one with at least 16 megs of RAM and 4 megs of ROM. As much as I like the WRT54G, it is getting long in the tooth. You can get faster N routers pretty cheap. As I said before, I have a liking for a refurbished Cisco E2000, but there are other options. Don't be afraid to ask here if you see a router that catches your eye.

I recommend Asus RT-N16 and flash it with TomatoUSB firmware. This router has tons of CPU power and 128 MB of RAM for various optional features such as NAS, FTP server and BT client. It is now on sale at CanadaComputers at $80 after mail in rebate.

I've been quite happy with the Netgear WNDR3700. It's a simultaneous dual-band N router so it's premium-priced but there are some deals on it out there. Even with stock firmware it does a decent job of QoS and I have had no issues with it and the Grandstream ATA from FPL.

Over a year on WNDR 3500L running stock firmware without any hitch. Was looking at WNDR3700 but read that flashing to Tomato/DD-WRT erases default settings like for transmit power and if you did not save ROM state it will have bunch of issues.
