how to fix the problem without rebooting ATA?..

Post by volenin »

Here is the thing: occasionally (~2-3 times a week, and happened just now, oct 10, ~2:45pm), I seem to stop receiving the incoming calls with FPL (this didn't happen with the other VoIP provider, so we'll rule out hardware issue right away). If I reboot the ATA, I start receiving the calls again.

The problem with that is I can't know up front when this type of problem appears, as the dial tone IS working and I CAN make outbound calls. Basically, the only way to check if the service is 'working' is make the calls to your FPL line once in a while and see if the phone rings. Obviously, that presents a problem. I wonder if there is any way to address this issue? Eg, would setting 'register expires' setting to a lower value (let's say, every 15 minutes) help? Will 're-registering' the ATA resolves this type of issues? Is there any other way to detect this problem from the provider (FPL) side and make the ATA 're-register' on that event or do smth that would fix this issue without manual intervention?

This type of 'bug' is really annoying - you never know whether you are not receiving the calls because no one calls you or because your line is down.........

Re-registering would be the same as re-booting in the sense of registration. The issue with the lower registration time was that EVERYONE using FPL was registering at the same time, putting a lot if load on our system. Needless to say everything but your phone number, password, and of course our servers can be modified to what you see fit.

Well, that's the thing - I'm not too sure what settings can/should be modified to fight this sort of problem... What might be the reason that the ATA stops picking up the calls? If I know the reason(s), I can probably google up some answers...
