Re: how to send a sms or text message?
Currently that is an unsupported feature actually...
I'll look into it an see the costs associated with it.

Yep, most cell providers will provide a TXT-to-landline feature, where it will narrate the TXT to landline phones.leyteboyz wrote:they can send text msgs from cell to your FPL telephone i tried work mine.....

Re: how to send a sms or text message?
If you know what provider the person is with you can simply e-mail them a text.
For instance I'm with telus so you can e-mail a text message to my phone at 705331xxxx@msg.telus.com
I don't know of any canadian providers who don't have this functionality, but you do need to know the domain extension.

Yep, pretty much all Canadian providers have that. Although, depending your plan, some will charge you for incoming email textsBloodsong wrote:If you know what provider the person is with you can simply e-mail them a text.

There's usually a system at your mobile provider that will use text to speech to read text messages to non-mobile phonesmikewen wrote:How did you receive the text msg ?

I tried txt'ing my FPL from my cell for fun, the message does not go through. Not that it really matters ,why would you need or want to receive a txt on a phone that can not send txt's anywaysTHUFIR wrote:What happens when FPL receives an SMS? (Tried to fit in another TLA, but no such luck

Oh, I've completely stopped using a cell! However, some websites (google, facebook) use SMS for their services. Plus, it would just be neat to send receive SMS Sometimes it's quite convenient for quick messages.
I don't see any reason why there isn't an e-mail <--> SMS gateway, unless it's a legal thing. There are services out there for it, but they're absurdly awkward: SMS to ### + name or something.
I just got an android tablet, http://www.archos.com/products/ta/archo ... ca&lang=en , and would love to have an SMS app on there.
Re: how to send a sms or text message?
If you know what network they are on you can send text messages to them fairly easily using email. This is a list of the gateways http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SMS_gateways but basically you send an email to number@msg.telus.com for Telus mobiles.
The only downside is they can't text back unless they send you an email back.

Google voice has something for you.THUFIR wrote:Red89GT wrote: I just got an android tablet, http://www.archos.com/products/ta/archo ... ca&lang=en , and would love to have an SMS app on there.

Ok, I'll check that out
I think google voice, like skype, isn't allowed to fully operate in canada, though? There's an opportunity in there for a smart company (hint, hint) to develop a good android app and sms gateway. I'll also look at those gateways mentioned in wikipedia.
Some people are just easier to reach via SMS, they just don't have smart phones.
