Problems with ATA and VPN

I have a HT-286 plugging into my on-board ethernet port and wireless connection to the internet. I have had no problems with the connection in the past. Recently I installed Expat Shield VPN and noticed that my ATA got disconnected every time I connected the VPN. It would come back once I disconnected the VPN. Can anyone advise me how I can get around this problem?
