Hi folks,

Really appreciate all the help you've given me so far.... wonderful community.

I'm *this close* to getting setup with FPL but before I start the number transfer, I'd like some options on low-cost ATAs please.

Something around $50 would be ideal. Any suggestions for stores / vendors would you helpful as well, since these things aren't usually stocked at BestBuy.

It is a little difficult to figure out what FPL/Fongo are offering from their web pages. As far as I can tell they still offer the Grandstream GS286 ATA which has on voip line for <$50. It is supplied configured for FPL and support. The GS286 (I have one but not for FPL) is not a bad little SIP ATA and in my experience it works OK and is easy to configure. There are loads of other ATA devices available and exactly what to buy depends on your needs. Do you need more than one voip line, a built in router, support for a normal PSTN phone etc.

I guess my needs are fairly basic
- single line
- no router (have separate one)
- no pstn support needed

Fongo doesn't appear to be selling ata devices anymore. They now sell them as part of a $4.95 per month package.

I use the Grandstream HT286, which is a fine, simple router. It is no longer being manufactured and has been replaced by the HT701 series. However, some suppliers still have them.

fongo and FPL are separate. You can get an ata from FPL. If you choose fongo them it's a monthly fee

Well I guess the GS286 might be the best choice if you are not "a computer person", however, I see that you use "Dry Loop", Ubuntu and dd-wrt and probably have some knowledge of computers so you might want something a little more interesting. An old favorite among some is the Linksys PAP2 series that have 2 voip lines but are a little more difficult to configure than the GS286 (make sure that it is tha NA never locked version). A newer model has replaced the PAP2 now if you are buying new called "Cisco SPA112 2-Port Phone Adapter". There are also the Obhai voip adapters (http://www.obihai.com) that are becoming popular but I have now experience with them. There are lots of other but some of the cheap unknown maker models are probably best avoided.

Neptune: I am aware that on the main amazon.ca site, the HT286 is out of stock. This is why I directed you to ModemOutlet, an Amazon reseller, who appear to have them and ship from Ontario.

Dunno. I guess they have removed that option. Although I could have sworn someone said you can still buy their ata. Maybe you have to call in?

You used to be able to buy the ATA from them, but you also had to buy the config at the same time. This seems to have been replaced with their Fongo option now on their site. You might still be able to get it if you call in.

Also check voipsupply.com they tend to have decent prices.

After signing up your account with FPL, a quick call into a CSR will have you set up with the new ATA (and VoIP unlock key to use it with FPL)
