MagicJack+ & FPL

MagicJack+ & FPL

I use MagicJack + but I can't keep my current phone number... I am thinking to change for FPL to transfer my number but I spend the winter (6 months) in the USA... However most of my calls are between Québec and Florida. Has someone compared the 2 Voip systems ?

They are both working great

Depending on how often you call outside the free calling area, it may be better with FPL as there is no yearly fee's and the long distance ratesi n Canada and the U.S. are very low (starting at 2 cents a minute)

Or, even better, sign up your friends and loved ones so everyone can call everyone for free!!!

Si j’ai bien compris, lorsque je suis aux USA je peux téléphoner gratuitement au Canada vers une ville située dans une zone d’appel gratuite et les gens de cette zone peuvent également m’appeler gratuitement ?

If I have understood correctly, when I'm in the USA I can call free of charge to the Canada, a city in a free calling area and the people of this area can also call me for free?

You can call with the service no matter where you are as long as you have high speed internet access.

It will be a free call for other to call you as long as they do not usually need to dial long distance to call the number.

Or use the softphone or the app on your smartphone (Dell voice with wifi or Data access, roaming charges may apply from your provider depending on your coverage agreement)

All the recent posts are correct. Just remember the general rule -- actual PHYSICAL location does not matter much at all. The main limitations as to whether your VOIP service will work or not at any given worldwide location is your access to the internet. Be that a data plan on your mobile (be wary of roaming charges!) or a wifi/wired internet connection of any description. The caveat on the latter is that depending on the internet access provider, they may block or limit certain traffic, like VOIP or torrents (common overseas, and at public internet access like wifi hotspots (restaurants/hotels/etc).

That said, in my travels throughout western Canada and USA, most free restaurant/store wifi DOES BLOCK VOIP (McDonalds, Starbucks, Dennys), but things like truckstops and hotels/motels generally DO NOT ... however, due to the high sharing of the bandwidth at these locations, it may be unusable. In all my hotel/motel stays where I have used my laptop with the FPL PC softphone, I had two instances where VOIP traffic was blocked, a few where changing port numbers worked and several where it required using a wired connection vs wireless to get enough bandwidth/signal quality.

As has been stated, if you can get an internet connection, the will function the same as it does at home for you, with the same calling areas/features etc. This is also true of the 911 service, should you chose to use it, so if you are at the same location for a week or two, may be wise to UPDATE that info on your account should you think that you may need to use VOIP 911 (and yes, thru the ESAP agreement in place, even if you have your AJAX, ON FPL# with you in DeadEye, NM and call 911, Northern Telecom (e911 provider, I believe -- Steve/Mike please advise!) will be able to route and dispatch your call correctly.

Well I have use DellVoice and FPL in Asia, US and east coast in Canada work fine. Since DellVoice came out on iOS I did not pay for long distance to VN. Save tone $$$$ fantastic. I helped a friends to save their phone bill by port to FPL or DV.

True that. I do wish that along with the much-talked-about expansion from Fongo that they would firm up what they already have and improve the quality of their softphones, network reliability etc (not to mention support offering, at least consistently). An increased calling area throughout Canada would be nice, but likely require further agreements that are not yet in place. Same for a larger base of available DIDs.

Temper that against it being a more or less FREE offering, and you have what you have. No excuse for 2nd rate product, but understandably limited to what can be provided at no/low cost.
