Call Forwarding & adding Dell number to My10 Rogers list

Hello everyone!

I am in Toronto and my cell is from Rogers. So my home area is in Toronto and I have Incoming Calls Free in the zone and My10 Canada-wide.

Now I am in Calgary. I’ve got a local (587) Calgary number from Dell Voice and it works if I have my 4G/LTE/Wi-Fi. But it is not everywhere in Alberta and I'm renting a basement…. So I decided to add the Calgary number to My10 list and forward all incoming calls from the 587 number to my Toronto 416 number with hope that Rogers will count it like calls coming from 587 number included in the My10 list.

The forwarding works, but I can see actual numbers of people calling me, I mean local 403 and 587 numbers. And It makes me nervous because it seems Rogers may consider them as direct incoming calls while I am out of my home area and charge me $0.45 per minute.

Does anyone have any ideas?

You should be nervous because IT IS what it seems. :( Fongo preserves the ORIGINAL caller ID, hence you will be billed at LD rates for calls that are not local to 416, or are not in your My10, even if these calls were forwarded from your Fongo number.

As Bing Kol said, you will be charged by Rogers for the calls. Dell Voice will just simply pass on the call as if it was dialled directly.

I can do what you are trying to do, but only because I have a PBX running here and I have the FPL config file.

My suggestion to you would be to either sort out a wifi connection to the place you are staying, or possibly even look into getting a cell signal booster set up so your 4G signal will reach into the basement. A lot will depend on how long you will be there for, and how much you need to make phone calls.

I'm glad I'm asked :) I was relying on the forwarding and it worked ok when I was in my Toronto Incoming Free Zone.

So I have two options then, - to change my number for Calgary-one paying $10 to Rogers and loose my Toronto number forever so if I am back to Toronto I'll be given another number OR give Rogers extra $5.00 per month for "Call anywhere in Canada in US for $0.10/min". Hmm...

Instead of losing your Toronto number, you could always port it into Fongo or Dell Voice then setup a new Calgary number on your cell? Although there'd be some upfront costs (porting cost from Fongo, and the $10 you mention from Rogers to change your number), you'd end up being able to keep the number forever, would save the added monthly cost of upgrading your cell plan, and have fairly flexible options of what to do with it (use it on the Dell Voice mobile app, port it in to Fongo home phone, etc.)

That's a good idea, Steve!
Unfortunately I am on a contract with Rogers and there are 2 years till its end... I'm afraid porting would trigger cancellation fees from Rogers. I've just read Fongo porting rules and it says:

Please ensure that you do not contact your current carrier to indicate you will be cancelling/porting your number as they may consider this contact your 30 days’ notice. A "disconnect order" on file with your current carrier may prevent us from porting your number.

So in my case I would rather contact them first advising I am not going to interrupt the service; I need to get Calgary number and have the Toronto one ported to a third company. I have no idea if they can do it technically. I think I'll give them a call.

Let us know how you make out if you end up calling! I'm in a similar situation with a Fido contract and have often wondered if I could port my Fido number into Dell Voice, have them assign me a new number, and not be stuck with any extra fees or a terminated contract. Just been too busy to call and find out recently :)
