Lost access to the ATA

Post by laoloup »

I've been using a Linksys RT31P2. Everything is fine when my computer is on. But as soon as I turn off the machine, I can't dial out any more and can't take calls though I still hear the phone ringing. The calling party can't hear me and will be directed to my VM. Problem is http://192.168.15.1/ always returns timeout. How do I restore access to the ATA as a first step?

Well, who is your ISP?...

Typically (and ideally) you should be set up like this: MODEM > RT31P2 > WAP (if you have one)
or > COMPUTER(S)

I've also noticed that with my RT31P2 at home it works great but once it fails to connect via ethernet, it needs a factory reset (probably not at ALL what it needs, but it works).

Thanks, Kris. You're right. On checking my connections, I found that there's no connection bw the ATA and the computer. The both have direct connections from the modem. No wonder there's no access from the computer to the ATA. So I've rerouted the traffic, and voila!

I actually have another question that I hope you can help. I've just installed a GE Skype phone (GE 28300 DECT 6.0). When it's used as a Skype phone, everything is great. But once I use it as a landline (voip) with FPL, I can't hear the other party though they can hear me clearly. It sounds like that incoming voice is muted. When I try to dial out, I don't hear a dial tone but I can still dial out and be heard. My phone rings all right, but when I pick up the phone I can't hear nothing. Can you please suggest some diagnostic steps? Thanks a bunch!

What kind of router do you have? Could you put your IP Phone or ATA in the DMZ? That would eliminate quite a bit of grief on your part regarding port forwarding ;)

My Linksys RT31P2 is both an ATA and a router. So the current configuration is Modem -> RT31P2 -> Computer. I believe it IS in the DMZ.

If the phone works for both incoming and outgoing voice with Skype, it should work with FPL as well. Evidently, it's not a hardware issue. What other configurations should I check?

Keep in mind that Skype and SIP are nothing alike...
Skype uses completely different (and proprietary) protocols
