Obihai 200/202/300/302 ATA Setup Guide

PostPosted: 09/30/2016

As of August 11, 2022, this link still works for downloading firmware version 3.2.2 (Build: 8680EX) for OBi200, OBi212, and OBi202 ATAs:
https://support.poly.com/support/s/arti ... re-Version.
I would download this file while you still can.

Version 1.50

Server Failover is back!!!
Major rewrite!

This is the version of the guide that will continue to be updated.

Version 1.51x

-- added link for optional instructions to create Tropo app to redirect anonymous callers
-- updated firmware version reference

Version 1.52 (January 21, 2018)

-- fixed a few typos I stumbled across

Version 1.53 (March 27, 2018)

- fixed some hyperlinks
- fixed some page references

Version 1.54 (April 2, 2018)

- mentioned the restriction (for incoming calls) of only one registration per FPL account being allowed on page 42
- added FAQ about rebooting the ATA on page 52

Version 1.55 (April 11, 2018)

- accidentally referred to RegisterRetryInterval as RegistrationRetryInterval on some pages
- accidentally referred to MTelemarketers as Mtelemarketers on one page
- fixed a grammar error (this is a long document, for me, that I'm often editing while I'm tired)

Version 1.60 (December 22, 2018)

- addressed a potential issue involving X_CheckPrimaryFallbackInterval that may cause temporary IP bans from FPL's Primary Proxy Server to persist (page 22)
- removed Tropo instructions since that service no longer works
- updated hyperlinks
- updated some general information

Version 1.70 (February 24, 2021)

- fixed all hyperlinks
- added information for Asus routers in preamble under Hardware Specific Issues
- updated some general information

Version 1.71 (May 24, 2021)

It's recommend that SIP Passthrough in the latest official Asus router firmware be set to Disabled. Enabling it is a potential security risk as is
enabling SIP ALG in general in many routers. In Asuswrt-Merlin, don't have SIP Passthrough set to "+NAT Helper". NAT Helper is the ALG.

The section on not needing to disable SIP Passthrough in Asuswrt-Merlin has been deleted.

Version 1.72 (July 31, 2021)

- added link for firmware 3.2.2 (Build: 8680EX) for OBi2XX series ATAs

Version 1.73 (September 17, 2021)

- a few hyperlinks were updated

Version 1.75 (September 24, 2022)

- DigitMap updated to support 988 Suicide Prevention Services as per https://support.fongo.com/hc/en-us/arti ... 1-911-etc-
- Notes added on Rogers XB7 and XB8 gateways
- Notes added on Asuswrt-Merlin SIP Passthrough/SIP ALG
- hyperlinks updated

I've kept version 1.43 on page 1 of this thread (down below) for those who need a version without server failover.

I'm keeping this version here in case anyone wants a non-failover version of the guide.

Version 1.43

- updated digitmaps on pages 5, 6, and 15 to reflect that Freephoneline supports some N11 codes.
https://www.fongo.com/government-service-numbers/
http://www.cnac.ca/other_codes/n11/n11_codes.htm

Note that dialing 411 with Freephoneline costs money.

https://www.freephoneline.ca/termsCondi ... 11Text.jsp
"The Service does support 411 calls, which shall be charged at a rate to be determined from time to time by FPL, and it also supports 311 calls where available."

Obihai isn't very forthcoming with public firmware release notes. However, sometimes you can find some here:
https://www.ukvoipforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=987

Also, OBi200/202 firmware threads can be found at http://www.obitalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=9983.160 and http://www.obitalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=13484.0.

At this time, firmware 3.1.1 (Build: 5804) and 3.2.1 (Build: 5794EX) are the last official firmware versions for both the OBi200 and OBi202 that support XMPP.

a) http://fw.obihai.com/OBi202-3-1-1-5804.fw (also works for OBi200)

This version doesn't support OBiExtras.

b) http://fw.obihai.com/OBi202-3-2-1-5794EX.fw (also works for OBi200)

The EX version supports OBiExtras.

These firmware versions work with the guides in this thread.

It doesn't matter whether you use the EX firmware version, even if you don't subscribe to OBiExtras.
Obviously, if you do subscribe to OBiExtras, you'll need the EX version of the firmware.

These firmware versions were reported in this thread: https://www.obitalk.com/forum/index.php?topic=13484.20.

There's modded firmware available now, but using it may void the warranty on your ATA. I would prefer not answering questions related to the use of that firmware, but it might be useful for those that know what they're doing. That said, use it at your own risk, and please don't ask me to troubleshoot issues relating to it. I accept no responsibility for any problems arising from its usage. For those that want to ask questions about it, do so over here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r317927 ... rmware-mod. Respectfully, please do not post questions about this user-hacked Obihai firmware on these forums.

The related site is located at http://www.obifirmware.com/.

The following information hasn't been added to the guide since it's possible that Obihai is going to address this issue in a later firmware update.

If you're using your own answering machine (as opposed to Freephoneline's voicemail system) and you're hearing beeping on recorded messages, then your ATA is treating the incoming call, incorrectly, as a fax event (and the following instructions below apply):

If you used the Obitalk web portal (http://www.obitalk.com) to configure your ATA, keep in mind that you must continue using it to configure your ATA. Otherwise whatever settings you change will eventually be overwritten by what you previously entered at obitalk.com anyway. If you wish to disable this behaviour, dial ***1. Enter the IP address you hear into a web browser. Navigate to System Management-->OBiTalk Provisioning-->select Disabled for the method. Save. Reboot ATA. Now obitalk.com won't overwrite whatever changes you make via the device's interface (via IP address).

Pick one method (obitalk.com) or the other (IP address of device) for changing device settings. But do not use both methods.

If you're using Obitalk.com, look at this picture for reference: http://i.imgur.com/xwyqgRE.jpg
That grey cog wheel with the "E" is for the expert configuration menu.

It shows when logging in at http://www.obitalk.com, selecting "Edit Profile" on the left, then scrolling down
under "Advanced Options" and finally selecting "Enable OBi Expert Entry from Dashboard."

Otherwise, dial ***1. Enter the IP address you hear into a web browser.

1. Navigate to Codecs-->Codec Profile (do this for both A&B)-->Codec Settings

2. If T38Enable is enabled, change T38Reinvite to "callee only"
(uncheck both device default and Obitalk settings boxes if necessary)

3. Save settings/reboot ATA

This issue has been fixed in the latest firmware version, 3.1.1 (Build: 5804). If you're on that firmware version (or later), there's no need to follow the quoted instructions.

That's really 3.2.2 (Build: 5859EX). I'm glad the manual download link was found.
However, that link is now dead. Obihai killed it.

Keep in mind that

1) in the event you have problems with 5.2.2. (Build: 5859EX), you can't downgrade to a lower firmware version once it's installed, and
2) once the official version of 3.2.2 (Build: 5859EX) is installed you can't apply the hacked firmware version of 5.2.2. (Build: 5859EX).

3.2.2 (Build: 5921EX) works with the FPL PDF guides posted in this thread. 3.2.2 (Build: 5921EX) works with Freephoneline.

Yes, this PDF guide also works for the OBi30x series ATAs, provided the ATA has not been locked to an Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP). The ones sold by Acrovoice should come unlocked. The 3XX series was intended to be sold by VoIP service providers directly. Otherwise, the main difference is that the OBi3xx series ATAs do not, officially (using official firmware), support Google Voice, whereas the OBi2xx series ATAs do. If you don't care about Google Voice or about using official firmware, the OBi3xx series ATAs may make more sense, depending on pricing.

Newegg Canada has OBi202, OBi200, and OBi212. Be careful that you're not purchasing from a marketplace seller instead of from Newegg on Newegg's website.

OBi200 is also available from Amazon. Provided Amazon Canada is the seller, the warranty will be honoured. Be careful that you're not purchasing from a marketplace seller instead of from Amazon Canada on Amazon's website. Obihai Technologies, Inc. is also an authorized seller on Amazon's website.

Polycom/Poly has acquired Obihai, and there's no significant difference from the previous OBi2xx ATAs, other than the colour of the casing and the Polycom logo.
Newegg Canada used to have sales on these ATAs, periodically. $69.99 is the normal (non-sale) pricing for the OBi200.

Using official firmware, the OBi200/202/212 series ATAs support Google Voice while the OBi30x series ATAs do not, unless you use hacked firmware (see http://forum.fongo.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 546#p75081), which I won't be answering questions about on these forums. Using hacked firmware likely voids the product warranty in the event Obihai can determine you're not using official firmware.
Getting a Google Voice number requires a non-VoIP U.S. landline or U.S.cellular phone number in addition to a U.S. IP address. Google Voice numbers are not required for calling out though (a Google Voice account is); they are required for incoming calls only. Getting a Google Voice account requires a U.S. IP address. Moreover, Google Voice numbers are U.S. numbers, so if you want a Canadian phone number you'll need to use Freephoneline. That's the limit to what I'm willing to discuss about Google Voice. As these forums are for Freephoneline users, I won't be discussing anything further involving Google Voice setup or support here.

Acrovoice is another authorized Obihai dealer in Canada, and they stopped selling the OBi2xx series because Newegg Canada kept undercutting Acrovoice's pricing during Newegg's sales.
Acrovoice will sell the OBi3xx series if you contact them. They may also sell the OBi2xx series if you contact them and ask.

To see Canadian authorized Obihai retailers, visit http://www.obihai.com/intlsellers.

The importance of authorized dealers is that Obihai won't honour the warranty of its products sold elsewhere in Canada. You would need to produce a receipt from Newegg Canada (must be both shipped and sold by Newegg Canada and not a third party seller), Acrovoice, or Amazon (provided the seller is either Amazon or Obihai Technologies.--and not another third party) for warranty coverage. Keep in mind that Obihai requires the user to pay to ship the product to Obihai in California in the event of a hardware issue covered under warranty. Obihai pays for the return shipping. The limited hardware warranty period is 1 year.

By the way, it's recommend that SIP Passthrough in the latest official Asus router firmware be set to Disabled. Enabling it is a potential security risk.

In Asuswrt-Merlin, just don't have SIP Passthrough set to "+NAT Helper". NAT Helper is the ALG.
