Someone's spoofing my number

Post by alwayscurious »

I have a tablet on a data-only plan, but I installed the Fongo mobile app in case I need to make an emergency call, and to receive two-factor authentication SMS messages for online services.

Recently, I've been getting many calls (as much as 4 calls in 20 minutes) from people claiming that I called them. Some of them get quite angry. There is no record of any outgoing calls on my Fongo app. I think someone might be spoofing my number. I opened a ticket with Fongo, but they simply closed it without a reply. What can I do? If I get a new number, what can I do to prevent this from happening again?

There is nothing Fongo can do about this. A spammer has decided to use your phone number for their caller ID. They could have used any number, it just happens to be a phone number tied to you. Fongo has no control over this because it has nothing to do with their network, and they have no association with the spammer, they are not even using any of Fongo's infrastructure.

This problem is being worked on in a national level, but there are telco providers that are not ready, so it has been delayed.

Best you can do is be polite with the people that call you and say your number is being used, but you have nothing to do with the spammer.

Thank you for replying.

What would be the procedure to get a new Fongo number? Do I request deletion of my account and then create a new one?

This FAQ should help you.

The only trouble you might have with abandoning your number is with the email address you signed up with as it will still be assigned to the other account until they delete it.

Changing phone numbers does not stop robodialers from dialing any valid area code and prefix (519-663, for example) followed by all possible numbers between 0000 to 9999. That does and can happen. Worse still, it happens from fake or spoofed outgoing phone numbers.
