Android app stops running in background
Dell Voice app on my Android stops running after I keep it running for a while in the background.
Anyone else experience the same issue?
Or it's something wrong with my phone?
I have a Nexus S on stock Android OS 2.3.6

Re: Android app stops running in background
Is your phone set to close applications if your memory reaches a certain low point?
Mine persistently runs in the background, and I've set my phone to clear memory when full and not force close apps to save it.

Re: Android app stops running in background
Let me take a look - I've modified my phone to the point of no return so it might take a minute or two to find it.
Update: It is most certainly a function of the kernel I'm running and not available on stock installations. When you notice the app closed, I'm assuming you just wake up your phone and what was once a "Connected to Fongo" message there is nothing; you wouldn't happen to know how long it runs, do you?
I have zero experience with the Nexus S, it might be a function of the phone to clear data on suspension.

Re: Android app stops running in background
Yes, that's exactly what's happening.
But I don't know if it's specific to my phone, maybe I need to perform a Factory Reset.
Would like to know if there are other users experiencing this issue.
But it runs for quite long a long time before it disappears.
I'll try to time it to see if it's consistent.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for your help!

Thank you clee666, we'll wait for more info.
I'd like to clarify I'm not advocating a factory reset

I'm experiencing the same thing with a Samsung Galaxy Gio. I don't think it's a low memory issue because I have over 50MB of available RAM.

Saw the same thing this morning on my Nexus S running stock 2.3.6.
I also don't believe it's a low memory problem as I have 50 MB of free memory

I am using the Galaxy S2, same problem, running for awhile, and it disappear without me knowing. Lot of free RAM memories.

Galaxy Gio. Same problem.
116 MB RAM free.
18,62 MB free on internal phone memory.
26 GB free on SD card.
Measurements verified just after restarting Dell Voice (it had shutdown by itself without warning).

Re: Android app stops running in background
Hi there,
I'm having the same problem and it appears to only happen after long periods of phone inactivity. I have my wifi settings to never go to sleep (so it doesn't try to switch to 3G at home when the phone goes to sleep) and the phone plugged into power as well. I go to bed at night and it's fine, and in the morning Dell Voice is off. It's consistent. Everything seems to work fine as far as the application goes when it's running, and I'm real happy with it.
I have a Nexus One with a stock 2.3.6 OS.

Re: Android app stops running in background
yes. Mine is the same thing. not only at night, if I don't use phone for a while, dell voice will disappear. why this topic is marked "resolved"?dickduff wrote:Hi there,

Maybe Dell voice should use other watchdog to monitor dell voice app.

Re: [resolved] Android app stops running in background
Yes, this problem isn't resolved yet and shouldn't be marked as such.
Just out of curiosity, are there any Android users reading this thread, who are using a "Stock" Android operating system and who are able to keep Dell Voice running 24/7, without the app quitting on them? Not including people who have modded their phone or are using scheduling apps to keep it running.
If everybody is having the same problem, then it would make sense that it's the Dell Voice app that's the problem, and it will probably require an update to fix it. Other VOIP apps seem to be able to keep running ok, although some of them have their own problems too>
It would be interesting to hear from anybody who is able to keep this thing running all the time, who isn't having issues. Maybe you can list your phone and OS you're running as well.
Thanks a lot!

I have not had problems with my phone. I have not had it drop out once as described in this thread.dickduff wrote:Yes, this problem isn't resolved yet and shouldn't be marked as such.

I have the same issue. Mine is Sony Xpress 10.
The app just stops after being idle for a while.
Everything on my phone is stock. I didn't root the android.

Re: [resolved] Android app stops running in background
Completely Agree!!!dickduff wrote:Yes, this problem isn't resolved yet and shouldn't be marked as such
I just registered to this forum to ask why this has been marked "resolved" because it "hasn't"! Who is responsible for marking it resolved and why??
I've had this issue from day one including several times yesterday. Doesn't matter if the screen is on or asleep - it still happens!!
My player shows a Dell process is still running but nothing in the notification bar and if i try to call it from my cellphone, there is no ring or notification from the player. Clicking on the Dell App Icon shows Dell Voice needing to sign into Fongo again!

Re: [resolved] Android app stops running in background
When I go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications and look at the Running tab, I see Dell Voice in the list as 1 process and 1 service running.
But I don't see the Fongo blue phone icon in the Notification bar. It was there earlier when I started Dell Voice but seems to disappear after some time.
If I then start the Dell Voice app, I see the "blue phone checkmark" icon and "Connected to Fongo..." in the Notifcations.

Re: [resolved] Android app stops running in background
Kris also said that his phone was heavily modded and that users with stock Android phones don't have that option. We shouldn't have to mod our phone to get the app to work properly should we? Other posters were saying that memory didn't appear to be the problem but I guess it's possible that there are memory leaks with the program that are causing it to quit after a while. Somethings not right anyway.

Re: [resolved] Android app stops running in background
That is exactly correct dickduff. Just because I have the ability to do that and it works does not necessarily mean it is the answer, the fact that I have to do that is an indication of the problem. Memory is a concern which has been passed to our development team.dickduff wrote:Kris also said that his phone was heavily modded and that users with stock Android phones don't have that option.
You should not have to do anything to your phone beyond what it's capable of out of the box to have any app work (within' reason), you are right.
