I've talked with the programmers and it is a global issue, there is a lot of stress on the system. We're looking for a way to enhance server space and efficiency to accommodate all the calls.

We disabled some scripting so call volume should not effect us as much as it did before. We are looking into getting some (a lot) more room on our servers but for now we are doing our best to fix things up so they work the best they can.

As with most of you guys we have weekends off, slow response from us here at FreePhoneLine should be expected.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I do look when I can.

Hi Kris,

This should have been advertized as not reliable service.
System is working from horrible to perfect, but customer never know how it will work.
Now, last week it was not only bad quality, but phone cannot be used at all.
It is really problem, when system does not work, and I cannot logon, anybody who calls me receive busy signal, not my voice mail. It is really bad.
Do you say that nobody is working on Saturday or Sunday? Phone is service 7/24 and it should work always.
It would be great that you post warning about system. When my quality is bad, and I speak to support, they always try to blame on my internet connection, never told we have an issue and trying to fix it.
Support cannot be reached at all after 5 PM. Signal is always busy.
You should charge something or it would not be system customer will use, even if ti is free. Free system is good and acceptable if it does work. Otherwise it is not system.

Thanks for help.

I also have the same problem with my phone. I dont pay a cent for my service so how can I complain. If someone cant reach me on my house phone they call me on my cell. The way I look at it is that the FREE phone is great, if I dont have a phone for a few hours, big deal. If someone needs to get a hold of me that badly, and it is important that my phone works, ill pay for the service and expect it to work. If you dont like getting a free phone with some problems, then go out and pay 50 or more dollars per month. Then you will have somthing to complain about.

You make many very valid points :)
We work harder than most "free" companies out there to make sure our systems work as best and as reliably as they can. However, they aren't without the occasional hickup. When problems occur, we work as fast and hard as we can to resolve them in a timely manner. Consider us as still being a company in our early stages, so there are lots of things that need ironing out and modifying as we grow and run into new situations. Like you say, if we charged people a monthly bill then I would completely understand the disappointment when things are down or giving us problems. However, it's free and you aren't paying a penny for the service nor are we charging you a bill for our support. It's completely under your digression if you rely on us as your primary home phone or not!
The big plan is to eventually cover all of Canada and take the service to the next level where users can add-on "premium" options. Hopefully everyone will stick around while we grow into a bigger and more exciting service! Since it's a free service, there's certainly nothing to loose whether you keep us as a secondary line or a primary!

In regards to the authentication error: I'm told it should be ironed out in a few hours but I'm not personally in the department working on that issue.

It would be great if at least forwarding would work when a system update it being done. I ported my home phone number here so then I could forward to my mobile or other internet phone for which I have an ATA. However right now all callers get is a busy signal. They can't even leave a voicemail. I paid for the SIP file so I'm a paying customer. I know it is cheap so I'm not going to complain a lot but if they could just make it so that forwarding is a separate part of the system that always works it would be a lot better for me. Just a suggestion. I have no idea how hard that would be to implement.

I'm not sure how hard that would be to do either - but I will pass the suggestion on. It would most likely require a whole separate server to handle follow-me which could be tricky to tie in with the main server. But I will pass the idea along!

I'm with the 'westor' on this point: I think most of the people how DO notice the problems with the service ARE the paying customers who bought the SIP configuration file. In my case I bought two. Plus, the fee for porting the number, plus the cost of the ATA gateway: $50 x2 + $20 + $75 = ~$200. With your average phone provider you'll be spending $30 to $40 per month, depending on who you go with and the features you are getting. So, in my case (even if we just consider one line, ie $150 expense), I 'prepaid' for 4-5 months of phone service. So must have most of the other people here who didn't have the ATA gateway. By 'prepaying' (for the SIP config, hardware, etc) customers are showing the trust in the service and their willingness to take the risk. Unfortunately, so far it doesn't quite pay off.... If I'm porting out now, I'll be basically down $200 for the service I didn't receive. But, again, I do realize and appreciate it's a 'one time' expense and FPL is really trying hard to resolve all the issues...

But money point aside, what I think most of the people here who use FPL as a primary service provider want to know, is whether these problems are systematic or not. For example, is the FPL service really at the capacity now (from what I could understand from Kris post) and the measures that are being taken now would just alleviate the problems somehow for a little while and are rather quick fixes than anything else? If it is so, how soon the capacity can be increased, so that the service is back to normal and can handle occasional spikes in load?

I, for one, REALLLYYY!!!! want to know if the recent problems were just the bad combination of coincidences or the FPL is struggling now squeezing out the last drops of performance from their infrastructure just to keep things running for a little bit longer till the whole thing would grind to halt and some serious time-out would need to be taken to upgrade the servers and add more capacity.

We are nowhere near capacity, server upgrades are the highest priority right now as new hardware is already being purchased today.
FreePhoneLine will never die, we are the sibling company of a CLEC who does what we do on a large business scale. However, they operate on their own independent, redundant, Canada-wide network. Since we don't have the income for that sort of large-scale infrastructure, our "free" service is a lightened up version of things that we operate with extra revenue plus the revenue of hardware sales. We are growing fast and making all sorts of changes, upgrades and enhancements as we go. The past week was a valuable learning experience for those who run the back-end and even though it's a free service, we are taking measures to try and further develop the network we use. As our funding increases, customer base grows and we move forward, you can expect that things should run without any major problems at all. In the several years we have been around, this is the first major hickup that has occured (the past few weeks of problems) and a great deal of them were all due to a botched upgrade that came to us from the system manufacturer.

Volenin, sorry to hear that your difficulties have left you feeling that porting out is the best solution for you. If you'd like to give us a try when things are running smoother again then please feel free to hang onto my email address from my profile here and I'll see what I can do to help you personally at that time.

C'mon........ I'm now again on the phone line with Dominican Republic, going through the stupid list of plugin/unpluging the router and convincing me that it's my internet provider problem..... The calls are unconsistent. Sometimes I can place the calls, sometimes I can not. Sometime people can get through to me, sometimes they can not. It would have been really funny if it weren't so sad. I've already upgraded firmware, reset all settings to factory defaults, etc.

Volenin,

Steve has informed me that you have Rogers 10.0Mbps. That's perfectly fine. My parents use this and their ATA works great.

Our back-end was down for a few minute (No idea why) but it's been told to me that it is fine now.

GENERAL INFO FOR OTHER LISTENERS:

If Rogers Ultra Lite or Lite issues can arise. You should check your speeds, anything below their Express may have connection and call quality issues.

Try calling Rogers, asking for a manager or a "Tier 2" tech, then requesting your line be changed to FastPath which will decrease packet loss SIGNIFICANTLY!...

Right now with the slower speeds there can be spikes in speed just like any internet connection.

On a 5 minute conversation you may have a spike of .512MB to 1.3MB in speed which will cause packet loss.

Well, I'll try to get Rogers put me on the FastTrack, but the issue right now is that with a completely idle internet (10Mb / 500Kb), I can't seem to receive or place the calls again - I'm succeeding only one time out of 10, even though SIP session does register correctly with FPL. Tested the speed of the provider just now - still looking good and close to the declared. On top of it, I'm being VERY conservative now on the QoS of my router and limiting 'up' bandwidth to approx 450Kb + allocating ~60Kb JUST for the VoIP service.

Can you or Steve look into my account, pls? At this point I'm really on the verge of porting out - it seems like that even with high time investment the service is still unreliable.

Connection Issues Fix:

1. Uninstall FreePhoneLine desktop

2. There is a folder that is not deleted that should be located in C:\Documents and Settings\USER\FreePhoneLine, this whole folder should be deleted.

3. Restart computer and reinstall!

How does this affect us, ATA users? Do we need to uninstall/reinstall our desktop appl even though we don't use it?
