Please Support +888 U.N. Disaster Relief Call Routing

The ITU (International Telecommunications Union) has allocated the global country code +888 to the OCHA branch of The United Nations in an effort to facilitate global humanitarian disaster relief response. I have posted a blog post on this topic:

OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) has teamed-up with iNum and Voxbone to manage their +888xxxxxxxxxxx number range which now shares the same IP-based global network that manages the +883 5100 xxxxxxxx iNum number range. The iNum/Voxbone network routes all +883/+888 calls for free.

The United Nations has tasked iNum and Voxboneto spread the word that they need the support of all telecommunications carriers and service providers, be it VoIP, PSTN, or Mobile, to work with iNum and Voxbone to facilitate FREE call routing to all +888 numbers and help OCHA keep their global telecom costs down while supporting world-wide humanitarian disaster relief communications.

Once again, I'm asking for consideration of the decision makers at FreePhoneLine.ca, Fongo and Dell Voice and their underlying carrier Fibernetics.ca, to help with +888 call routing, for free, in the name of supporting the United Nations disaster relief efforts.

Support for this, but I think that battles for additional support needs to be "picked and chosen" rather than trying to ask for too much at the same time. Good to put this on the radar, to be sure, but to try to ask for iNUM and this at the same time and also others petitioning for increased Canadian city coverage, DID's etc, too many requests may thin down the effectiveness of the requests.

Still support the idea though! Maybe just added to the back burner....

Colin Lightfoot at iNum/Voxbone has just posted the following article on the iNum.net website indicating how +888 call routing can help in times of global natural disasters, similar to what was just experienced this week with Hurricane Sandy:

CallCentric, a major North American VoIP telecom provider has just announced that they are now supporting Free calling to +888 international United Nations Disaster Relief assistance numbers.

CallCentric has already been offering free +883 iNum numbers and calling for years. Now, they are doing their part to support international disaster relief and assistance efforts by providing free access and calling to UN sanctioned +888 globally reachable numbers.

It would be great to see Fongo provide similar support for iNum +883 and United Nations +888 Disaster Relief efforts calls for free.

After all, there is no real cost to Fongo to participate in this. Voxbone, the carrier behind iNum and UN +888 calling, gives service providers (like Fongo) free access to their network for iNum +883 and UN +888 call routing. What's to lose? And, Fongo might even gain some positive press from it all...

Yes I wish they will have iNum soon or later but I don't think it will happen soon cause Fongo had tone of problem lately, but I did not have any problem at all.
