Wrong outbound CID

Post by kosiko »

I have freephoneline to setup on my SPA-1001. Everything is running good except the outbound calling ID. For example I use freephoneline to call my cell phone, some times I can see the correct phone number (647367xxxx) on my cell phone, sometimes I got "Blocked" message on my cell which means the freephoneline phone number was hided; And sometimes I see a different phone number (most of time I see 416-642-0882)

I used voip for many years and I have other VOIP service provider set on my ATA, all works fine, I don't see any setting will impact the outbound CID in my ATA.

I believe this is a bug at freephoneline, please advise.

Many thanks
K.

Hi Kosiko,

Have you had your number ported?

It's Alstreams way of saying they don't like your number - It's instead of putting Unknown (Unknown) as your CLID they put 416-642-0882 which I guess is good in some cases that it's not 'Unknown (Unknown)'

Thanks

Hi Kris,

Thanks for your input.

I am not quite sure what do you mean "Have you had your number ported?". I just follow the SIP setting FPL provided and I set them into the LINE1 of my SPA-1001. I don't use any Asterisk etc.

If you need more information, please let me know.

Thanks again!

Hi Kosiko

Porting means we take your home phone number out of your providers system (ie. Bell) and put it into our 'Porta' system, so instead of a Brampton 1-289-000-0000 it would be your regular 1-416-000-0000.

Great concept if you ask me!

Kosiko: Perhaps you could let us know what number it is that you are using on the Freephoneline.ca system and we can look at it. Chances are this 416 number you mentioned is the one you used to sign up for the service. We can check to make sure there isn't any strange code in the server. If your number is 1647367xxxx then I'm guessing it is the number you got from the registration (non-ported number) so we don't have to worry about any porting related issues. If you don't want to post your FPL number here, feel free to email support@freephoneline.ca

Hi Kris and Curtis,

I am using 647 367 xxxx, which is NOT a ported number. Please mask the phone number once you get it here. I don't know the phone# 416-642-0882, and also sometime the CID shown "Blocked" or "Unknown".

Appreciate all your help!

kosiko: I masked your number for you. I looked at the account and it doesn't seem like anything is off. I'm going to test an ATA here in the office and if I get the same problem as you I will email our internal tech to find out if something exists on the server that can be changed. If I don't get the same problem, we can look at possibilities that the adaptor configuration has an issue.

A couple things to try before responding:
1 -- What make/model is the ATA you are using?
2 -- When it logs in ("registers") what is the Date and Time (including year) that it logs in? If it is not today's date and time, there is a time setting issue
3 -- Have you ever had a VoIP number on this adaptor?
4 -- Does your home set up include anything other than [jack/cable]--[modem]--[router]--[ATA]? (Compter attached to router as well)

kosiko: I recently set up an ATA here in the office and called our internal network number, a cell phone with Bell and fax number (with call display) with Bell. All three of these showed that the call ID matched the call ID that you should have with the number you are using. Perhaps I could ask a couple more things:

1 -- What company supplies local phone service to the people who see your call ID as that 416 number?
2 -- What company supplies local phone service to the people who see your call ID as blocked?
3 -- Where did you get the adaptor? (us or the store)

I have an adaptor here in the office. I put your name on a sticky note, if you haven't already purchased an ATA with us and decide that it would be easier to get ours, I have one ready to go. If not that is ok too, I can easily reprogram it for someone else.

Thank Kris. Here is the answers:
1. I have SPA-1001, firmware 3.1.19(SE)
2. The register time is correct, it shows 6/13/2009, 11:51am, time is not an issue I believe
3. I had VBUZZER before I switch to FPL, that's the number 416-273-xxxx; I also currently set up line2 to nonoh.net for long distance, however, this service provider has no phone number, just for dial out
4. my home network setup as [Cable]-[Modem]-[Router]-[ATA, PC, LAPTOP etc], I don't think this will influence the outbound CID though

Kris, before I post this problem, I use the FPL to call my cell (rogers) about 8 time continuously, the 1st~4th call I got the correct number, 5th I got "blocked", 6th~8th I got 416-642-0882. So, if you can, try to redial, test it about 10 times, maybe you can reproduce the problem at your side.

Answers for your questions above:
1. I tested with my Rogers Cell phone; but I did know my friends who use vbuzzer got the 416 number too
2. Same as above, I will say not limited to rogers/vbuzzer, should be more but I need to double check later
3. Thanks for your offer. I used this SPA-1001 more than 3 years already, no problem so far and I have no plan to replace it.

Thank you very much

I am having an exact problem. However I am using Linksys WRTP54G (built in wireless voip router). The same 416 642 0882 number shows up sometimes

Answers for your questions above:
1. I also get the 416 642 0882 with my rogers cell phone. An unknown number shows up on bell homephoneline.
2. same as above.
3. I don't think its a issue with my ATA.

Hi Amit,

Glad to see that you proof that's not only my issue. Same here, I don't think it's ATA issue. The CID should be controlled by the FPL SIP server, not the client's ATA. If any setting could be cause this problem on the ATA, and someone can specify which option/setting has chance to bring the problem, we can look into more details for sure.

I hope Kris/FPL folks will have clue to what happened here soon. ;)

Kosiko and Amit: I am looking into the possibility that the phone number you are both seeing occasionally show up on your CID has something to do with the server. I will try some calls repeatedly to see if I can produce this result. In the meantime, I will speak with our server techs about finding out why this is happening. Perhaps I could have some help with that:

1 -- Can you call and produce this error and then record the number you used (a) the number you called (b) and the time you called (c)
2 -- Can you send these results to our company support email: support@freephoneline.ca

The reason I previously asked how you set up your connection, is that I was wondering if you had any kind of strange network configuration (some people wire multiple routers and ATAs around) Also, Kosiko, I'm Curtis, not Kris. Me and him are coworkers. Kris is Technical Support and although I used to be Technical Support, I am now the Shipping and Receiving Supervisor.

Kosiko and Amit: I spoke with our server tech and received a somewhat definite answer. The problem begins with the method in which we complete the calls. Some carriers will nto carry the CID for us so you will see blocked. That is unfortunate, but it is the sort of thing that can happen with a line that doesn't cost any money. As for that number (416-642-0882) that keeps showing up - I'm told that this number represents a number associated with our server that communicates with carriers to send the call through. If the carrier makes a mistake and thinks that our server's representative number is the CID, then that shows up. Unfortunately this is not something we can fix on our end.

If that's the case, then how come it is not encountered by all the FPL users? There must be some setting we can tweak to fix this problem!

Hi Kosiko,

That number - 416 642 0882, is the number we use to tell the landline telephone providors (Bell, Rogers, Primus, etc...) that it is an outgoing VoIP Phone Call and to let it through to the destination.

Now some of these companies will block the CID as they don't want to pay the money to stick your CID to that 416 642 0882 number so it will show up as Unknown (Unknown), and others will just leave that 416 642 0882 as your CID, this is of course all automated so it is hard to say when it can be fixed.

We are currently in fact working on this issue although it is happening so few times to so few people and not on a regular basis it's no too high of a priority on your list of bug fixes, it is still an ongoing concern though.

Thanks

Sorry for reply so late.

Kris, I agree this is not a major issue, so far I am happy with the service FPL provided. As Amitmeh mentioned, this is should not be overcome/fix as other cheap voip service provider has no this kind of problem. I will keep an eye on this post and I hope one day you can have a update at here saying the problem resolved.

Many thanks

Absolutly Kosiko,

Besides what you said, VoIP is becoming very well known and as all the little companies fizzle out and the sources come a little narrower (My co-workers and I think that one day it would be nice if you could say "Bell, Rogers, Telus, Fibernetics (owner of freephoneline)" in one scentence without even thinking about it).

Sounds good doesn't it :)

Thanks and I will keep this updated,

Hi Kris,

Just wondering if there happens to be an update on this?
I was just doing some testing calling my rogers cell phone and 4 out of the 10 calls were that 416 642 0882 number.

It's a pain because I have friends and family that screen their calls and won't answer weird numbers.

Thanks!
