Switching ATA devices with Freephoneline

Post by s2000 »

Hi,

I currently have a Grandstream HT-802 that I am using with my Freephoneline account. Someone on Facebook Marketplace was giving away an Obi200 which I picked up. I wanted to switch my ATA device from the HT-802 to the Obi200. Just wondering how I would go about doing that. Also, can I just do a factory reset on the Obi200 and I would be good to go? If the person I got the Obi200 from didn't unregister the device from their previous provider, could I still use it? I know with internet modems they are locked to the provider until the customer unregisters the modem. Not sure if its the same thing with ATA devices. If it is the same, is there any way to check if the device is registered with a provider?

TIA!

I wanted to switch my ATA device from the HT-802 to the Obi200. Just wondering how I would go about doing that.
1) Unplug the HT-802, and don't use it. When there are multiple devices/softphones/SPs (on an ATA/IP Phone) using the same FPL account, only the most recent registration is valid. The previously registered device (or SP with an OBi200) will lose registration when using the same proxy server, and, consequently, incoming calls will not ring on it. This is especially important to consider if someone else is using your SIP credentials (username and password) that are found after logging in at https://www.freephoneline.ca/showSipSettings or if you're trying to register your FPL account with a smartphone SIP app (or FPL desktop app), with another device, or more than one SP on your Obihai device. Registration is required for incoming calls. It is not required for outgoing calls. Only one registration per FPL account is allowed at any time. A SP on an Obihai device is one registration. Using the HT-802 is yet another registration.

2) After performing a factory reset on the OBi200, connect it. Dial ***1. Enter the IP address you hear into a web browser. Login. Default username and password is "admin" (without the quotation marks). Navigate to System Management-->Auto Provisioning-->OBiTalk Provisioning-->select "Disabled" for the method. Click the "Submit" button.
You can't use Obitalk.com to configure Freephoneline anymore with an OBi200, and you don't want Obitalk.com to be pushing configuration settings to the OBi200.

3) Then configure the OBi200 using the PDF guide located at the bottom of the first post in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18805. Skip pages 10 and 11 (or anything mentioning Obitalk.com, which won't work anymore for configuring Freephoneline).

4) Afterwards, double check your settings against what's listed at viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20534.

Also, can I just do a factory reset on the Obi200 and I would be good to go?
Yes, typically, unless the ATA is defective.

https://www.obitalk.com/info/faq/Troubl ... tory-Reset

Note that Obitalk.com can no longer be used to add an OBi200 to a new Obitalk.com account, for provisioning Google Voice using official Obihai firmware, or for configuring the OBi200. Consequently, step 1 from the above link probably won't work, especially since it's unlikely you have access to the original Obitalk account (if used). You would need to perform step 2 from that link (and you won't be able to add the OBi200 to an Obitalk.com account afterwards).
If the person I got the Obi200 from didn't unregister the device from their previous provider, could I still use it?
Provided the ATA isn't defective, yes. After a factory reset, the device shouldn't be downloading configuration settings from anywhere.

I know with internet modems they are locked to the provider until the customer unregisters the modem. Not sure if its the same thing with ATA devices.
ATAs can be set to automatically download settings from configuration servers, yes, once the ATAs are turned on and connected to the internet. The OBi3xx series was sold with that purpose in mind (in other words, they were intended to be sold by ITSPs or Internet Telephony Service Providers along with their respective SIP services), and it's more common for them to be locked than the OBi2xx series. Performing a factory reset on an OBi200 should wipe out those settings, if any.

If you believe the OBi200 is locked, ensure that it's disconnected from the internet while performing the factory reset.

After connecting the OBi200 again, dial ***1. Enter the IP address you hear into a web browser. Login.
Default username and password is "admin" (without the quotation marks).
The ITSP Provisioning location is System Management-->Auto Provisioning -->ITSP Provisioning.
"Method" should be set to "disabled" if you want to ensure the ATA isn't downloading settings from a service provider's configuration server.

If it is the same, is there any way to check if the device is registered with a provider?
a) Dial ***1. Enter the IP address you hear into a web browser. Login. Default username and password is "admin" (without the quotation marks).

b)Navigate to Status-->System Status-->scroll through SP 1 to SP 4 -->Status
If any of the SP trunks are showing a registered status, then you'll have a pretty good idea.

By the way, the OBi2xx and OBi3xx ATA series are now discontinued. The replacement is the Poly 4xx ATA series, which doesn't support consumer Google Voice. One difference is Poly 4xx supports the G.722 audio codec, but Freephoneline doesn't anyway.

Poly owns Obihai, and HP owns Poly.

"The PDMS-SP cloud service" is Obitalk: https://pdmssp.obitalk.com/obinet/.

I believe Freephoneline configuration for the Poly 4xx ATA series is extremely similar to FPL configuration on the OBi2xx/OBi3xx ATA series.
