Extreme Choppy Sound...

Post by mjdavila »

Good afternoon guys,

I'm about ready to pitch in the towel and switch back to a landline... I beg for help..

I've had FPL for a number of years now.. and for the last few months I've had nothing but choppy sound. To the point where I cannot use my home phone at all. I just tell people I'll call them back on my cell.

I'm using a Linksys PAP2 - FW 3.1.22.

My ISP is Rogers Cable Extreme -Speed test results: DOWNLOAD 42.91Mb/s UPLOAD 3.12Mb/s http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3248694490

I've experienced this while my torrents are offline or online. So basically - nothing else using my connection.

The PAP2 is plugged directly into my main router/modem from Rogers - Cisco DPC3825 (no QoS settings available). I also use a secondary router configured as an access point for wireless and more connections on my upper level - Linksys E4200 running DD-WRT (but shouldn't affect the ATA).

Configuration: I've wiped it completely and then reconfigured using recommended settings found here. I've also tried G729A and G711.

Nothing seems to help.

Please help me fix this.. Thanks again.

I'm on Rogers using the 25/2 package and I have no audio issues.

Have you tried bridging the DPC3825 and using your own router instead and see if that solves the issue?

I'm surprised you were even able to get FPL working with the DPC3825. I had a similar setup to yours and I could not get FPL to work properly with a DPC3825. I had so many issues including one way audio and dropped registrations. I eventually gave up and just bought a new router and bridged the DPC3825 and everything has been working flawlessly.

Also if you have a smartphone you can try downloading a SIP app and configuring it for FPL. Disconnect your ATA, connect your smartphone to your home wifi and place a call via the SIP app. This will also help you determine if your ATA is faulty.

Something you may want to try is running a ping test from your computer over the connection when nothing else is using bandwidth. In the past, i have seen a number of issues where it was related to jitter on the Rogers connection (Rogers does not guarantee jitter rates)

Hi, The same thing here. My phone line became a source of constant annoyance. Talks over the phone are extremely choppy. There are sometimes seconds of the conversation lost. It appears I will also have to move on.

If anybody can help please do. Basic data:

- Router Netgear WNDR 3700v2,
- ATA SPA-2102
- Acanac 5Mb/800kB

Tried a lot of things, but to no avail. An idea what could be the cause?

Thanks,

Let me know if there's any improvement.

Hi,

I tried and it appears that it does help. It's to early to say. What could be the other potential issues. I tried to set QoS on the router, but it makes no difference even though I deleted everything except for the ATA on high priority.

Thanks,

What do you have for a modem? If you can put that modem in bridge mode, which allows the router to solely do the routing, that would certainly cut down in complication. "Smart" modems generally have dismal routers on them, so if you can disable it, do so.

I did a quick look of the Netgear WNDR3700, and it seems to have issues with VOIP. SIP ALG being one of them. My preference is to flash the firmware with a much better 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR3700 If that is too radical, you can at least flash with the latest firmware the Netgear WNDR3700 provides.

QOS is extremely difficult to get right, and generally slows down your throughput, so I do not recommend you enable it. It tends not to fix VOIP problems, because bandwidth is usually not an issue. The only exception is if you bit torrent a lot. If that is the case, limit the number of upload slots on your torrents to 2, and you do not need any more than 200 peers. There will be practically no difference in performance of your torrents, but it will be easier on your router and VOIP.

Set RTP Packet Size to 0.02 . Follow Mango guide on configuring your ATA.

Thanks all for advice.
The current situation:
- updated router to 1.0.1.14;
- disabled SIP ALG;
- checked ATA (RTP packet size was 0.02; codec G711u);
-disabled QoS on router;

It appears that SIP ALG disabling helped. Still there are now very short breaks in the voice going from home out.

Any other idea

Thanks,
Zoran
