Skipping audio - Grandstream Ht801

Postby gabwey » 08/26/2020

Hello,
I bought a HT801 two weeks ago to replace a dead OBI100. I configured the HT801 following the guide for the HT701 published here:
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18839

Everything seems to be running smoothly, but I am experiencing skipping audio during phone calls. It seems to occur at regular interval, and I lose the audio for about 1-2 seconds each time (and it always seem to be at the worst moment...).

My setup is:
Grandstream HT801 - 1.0.19.11
Netgear R7000 - running XWRT-Vortex : 384.15

Any suggestions to improve performance, and avoid the skipping audio?

Thank you.

I don't know very much about Vortex, but it appears to be Merlin. Anyway, the latest firmware version is 384.19 at this time. You may want to consider updating. I doubt firmware version is related to your issue though.

I would usually suggest reading page 43 from this guide: download/file.php?id=2164. I still do recommend reading page 43 and going through the steps listed (also consider interference from nearby devices, and try moving your ATA and phones away from them), but the description of "regular interval" is odd. I would expect random dropouts if this were a jitter or packet loss issue. The problem still could be related to jitter. When testing, use a regular mobility service or landline to help reduce the likelihood of the issue being on the other side of the call.

Hopefully other forum members and moderators have other suggestions as well.

I had an identical problem on the OBI200, I also had a different VoIP provider in Europe set up on the same device and the voice is high quality.
I tried the various options recommended on the forums, nothing helped, changed the router also did not help.
One day I found out that changing to "INband" might help…. bingo.
ITSP Profile A>General>DTMFMethod = INband
From now on, I have no problems, only the DTMF does not send the # key correctly the other sends it correctly. You can test the DTMF here: (804) 222-1111

DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) is, essentially, touch tones or sounds heard when a number is pressed on a dial pad.

Changing DTMFMethod to Inband addresses DTMF talkoff (unwanted touch tone sounds or beeps), which is triggered usually by high-pitched voices and by high-pitched sounds. It will, otherwise, not fix choppy audio and would have been a coincidental solution, unless some bug in your device is involved. I've had DTMFMethod set to Auto for approximately 10 years on OBi202 ATA without choppy audio.

The reason why reducing volume may help for DTMF talkoff is that it will lower the chance of a high-pitched noise triggering an unwanted touch tone sound or beep.
It also helps not to use hands-free calling (don't use speakerphone).

The Auto option for DTMFMethod negotiates RFC2833 or Inband for DTMF, and in this case, uses RFC2833 with FPL.

When Inband is used, the touch tone is sent in the audio stream as was done with traditional POTS (plain old telephone service) or as how one could imagine playing back tones from a recording.
When RFC2833 is used, an RTP event is produced that signifies the DTMF key press by the user.

Neither one of those options (or anything involving DTMFMethod) has anything to do with producing choppy audio.

Freephoneline uses RFC2833 because Inband will not work with the G.729a audio codec (due to it being a very lossy codec), and if there were an issue with RFC2833 producing choppy audio, everyone using FPL would be complaining.

You can test the DTMF here: (804) 222-1111

That's a U.S. number.

You can test, instead, for free using these Canadian numbers:

416 342 9562
250 412 5922

Inband will not work.

It's hard to disagree with your arguments. I switched to "Auto" again, I called 416 342 9562, the sound quality was good, I will continue to test.
The most annoying thing is when this happens during an important conversation, the last time it happened when I spoke to one of the government agencies.
So I set up "fallow> simultaneous" on my account and receive important calls on my cell phone.
P.S. I'm even longer with FPL than you are!

I've been with FPL since 2010, as my forum profile indicates. I just haven't been using an OBi202 the entire time because it wasn't released until 2012.
lol I forgot it was 2022, so I'll edit my previous post to reflect that.

I hope the service continues to work for you.

I changed to
ChannelTxGain -9
ChannelRxGain -8
I can still hear well whether it is calling the test number or my cell phone.
Very interesting.

ChannelTXGain is for incoming volume (earpiece)

ChannelRXGain is for outgoing volume (mic).

Those settings will affect the respective volumes on the phone attached to your Obihai ATA.

They will not affect volume for your Follow Me destinations. When you use Follow Me to connect a call (edit: for clarity, to your cellphone), you're not using your LAN and ATA.

I set up "fallow> simultaneous" which means ringing on the OBI200 and my cell phone.
I choose which one to pick up.

When a friend calls your FPL number and if you answer on your cellphone, settings on your ATA have nothing to do with what's going on your cellphone, even if your ATA did ring.
When you answer on your cellphone, in this example, the call is not connecting through your LAN.

That's right when I picked up my cell phone the connection was always perfect when the phone connected to the obi200 had problems.

When you answer on your cellphone, you're not affected by any potential issues with your internet service, lack of QoS on your LAN, or ATA settings.
Consequently, you'd be less likely to encounter a problem.

You might be interested in the information presented on pages 42 and 43 in this guide in addition to what you've read previously from Obitalk's troubleshooting site: download/file.php?id=2164. .

My Linksys max-stream AC1750 router does not have QoS - all new Linksys routers have opted out of this option.
There is a Priority option where I have assigned OBI "High Priority"
In OBI, QoS is set according to the instructions.
We will see how the tests are completed for a few days after the change
ChannelTxGain -9
ChannelRxGain -8
Thank you very much for help!
