Missed phone calls on FPL

Postby aLti » 09/23/2020

Ever since the little accident on September 03 and 04, whenever I answer a call it still shows as a "missed call" on my LCD screen. My router's firewall is inactive and I did a factory reset on the phone several times by now. The issue is happening on both voip.freephoneline.ca and voip2.freephoneline.ca. It would appear as if FPL's servers are unable to properly register that the call has been answered as if I have multiple VoIP phones (which I don't) using the "answered elsewhere" response, or sending the "cancel" packet as a response. The "Follow Me" option on FPL's Dashboard has been disabled. I'm using Grandstream 1625 by the way. The call logs are showing normal call clearing. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I didn't have the time (willpower, actually) to do yet another packet capture regarding this issue, but somehow I'm starting to regret doing business with FPL...

Just noticed yet once again that my incoming calls are going straight to voicemail. This is horrible. I'm going to find a different VoIP provider ASAP.

You don't have Do Not Disturb activated by chance. Believe code is *78 to activate it and *79 to deactivate. Give that a try to make sure its Deactivated.

I also noticed the following. Whenever a new voicemail is received, the red light blinks on my phone (this is expected) and when picking up the handset, a different dial tone is heard at the beginning (this is also expected, it indicates that there are voicemail messages pending). However, after dialing *98 and deleting all the voicemail messages, the red light still blinks on my phone and a different dial tone is still heard at the beginning even though there are no new voicemail messages...!? So I waited hoping their voicemail servers would update, and waited, and waited... but to no avail. Eventually I returned my phone to factory defaults yet once again, and deliberately omitted the voicemail option (*98) during the configuration and now it appears as if everything is working fine. But then again, everything was working relatively fine up until 25 minutes ago, when all of a sudden my incoming calls started going straight to voicemail, so we'll see just how long this is going to last... I think FPL's engineers really need to put their **** together... I also added another SIP account from a different provider just a few minutes ago and no issues with it so far...

Thanks for the info, but no, that wasn't it. I was calling myself today to see after how many rings the voicemail would activate. And then all of a sudden, while simultaneously calling myself, instead of 3 rings my calls started going straight to voicemail. I didn't change anything at that time. After hard-resetting the phone, I no longer use the automated *98 option and therefore I must manually dial *98 to check for any new voicemails. But at least the missed call icon is now gone after answering a call (and apparently this was related to the *98 setting, since hard-resetting the phone didn't fix it without removing the automated voicemail - tried several times). So now I should be doing packet captures and focusing on what type of garbage is being sent from FPL's voicemail servers to my phone. And honestly I have no intention of doing it, since I've already wasted plenty of time fooling around with this crap.

For years, it used to take approximately 10 to 15 minutes before a voicemail notification arrived once a message was left and 10-15 minutes for the notification to disappear after all voicemail were deleted. That was done on purpose by FPL.

However, I just tested, and it took 3 minutes for VMWI to trigger, which surprised me. Now I'm waiting for it to drop.

None of mine are.

Perhaps you're going to tell me something is misconfigured again?

Okay, it dropped. Interval seems longer to disappear than to trigger. I'll test again.

So, how many phone calls did you actually receive today?
Are you able to post the screenshot of your call logs?
And since FPL is "deliberately" waiting 15 mins or so to update their VM servers, do you mind explaining the rationale behind doing so?
Especially since FPL's Dashboard (website) instantly updates the VM status?

Yeah, MWI is much quicker to trigger than before.

I see 7 listed on one account. I'm not going to bother checking others.

Are you able to post the screenshot of your call logs?

I am, but I can't be bothered.

Oddly, the interval for MWI trigger has decreased since the last time I paid attention. I would guess the interval changed after this:

https://status.fongo.com/history
Resolved - Voicemail Notifications Not Arriving
Sep 04, 2020 - 11:02 (EDT)

Seems to be under 5 minutes. I'm surprised. I've tested twice.

I always felt the reason was to reduce server traffic. Also consider the reason why FPL's registration interval is 1 hour.

Especially since FPL's Dashboard (website) instantly updates the VM status?

Are you talking about

By the way, I would encourage you not to delete anything from there: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=17194&p=72630#p72630

It's possible the problem doesn't occur anymore, but it's so annoying when it does that I don't want to test again:
