Google pixel 5 going straight to voicemail

Postby Helpme14 » 11/30/2022

Hello,
I have setup my sip to work with a cisco spa112 box. I can make calls and receive calls accordingly from any phone including cell phones. However when I use my google pixel 5 with android version 13 cell phone to call out to my freephoneline numbrr(sip) it goes straight to voicemail. I have no idea why all my other family member cell phones work except for mine.

If anyone knows it would be appreciated.

Most likely culprits include call block (step 12), some form of SIP ALG, or something router (firmware)/LAN related.
Always disable Follow Me while testing for incoming call issues: https://www.freephoneline.ca/followMeSettings.

Follow the steps, step by step, down the list, and please provide information when requested.

from viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20199

If you require troubleshooting assistance, please provide the following information in your post:

1) the brand and model of the modem provided by or used with your ISP,

a) If you're using a modem/router combo, gateway, or hub issued by your ISP (and are NOT using your own additional separate router), contact your ISP to ask for assistance for disabling SIP ALG in the modem/router combo, gateway, or hub. Disable SIP ALG.

Here are two examples for disabling SIP ALG in gateways:

i) Hitron CGN3ACSMR and CODA-4582 series gateway modem/router combo from Rogers (and possibly other ISPs)

Open your web browser, and login at 192.168.0.1. Default username is cusadmin.
Select the “Basic” tab and disable “SIP ALG.” Click the “save changes” button.

ii) Arris XB6 from Rogers

Open your web browser, and login at 10.0.0.1
Navigate to Advanced-->Options.
Uncheck the SIP box.
Click "Apply".

iii) Technicolor XB7 from Rogers

Note that here isn't an option to disable SIP ALG in a (Technicolor CGM4331COM) XB7 (Gen 2) gateway with this Rogers firmware version:
eMTA & DOCSIS Software Version: Prod_21.1_d31 & Prod_21.1
Software Image Name: CGM4331COM_5.2p12s1_PROD_sey

According to a tier 2 rep at Rogers, SIP ALG is enabled by default in XB7 with no way to disable it.
I'm not sure whether that representative is correct (the part about SIP ALG being enabled). However, the response from Rogers seems to coincide with what's happening in Xfinity/Comcast XB7's in the U.S.: https://forums.xfinity.com/conversation ... 66f45f8df1. If you are experiencing issues with a Rogers XB7, try voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060 along with a high, random local SIP Port (SIP Port is found by navigating to Voice-->whatever Line you're using for FPL-->SIP settings, should be a random number between 30000 and 60000 when using a Linksys/Cisco ATA).

iv) XB8 (Gen 3) has just been released from Rogers

I have no information yet concerning whether SIP ALG can be disabled in the XB8.
A tier 2 rep mentioned that Rogers is moving towards locking out administration setting changes for users, so it's doubtful that SIP ALG can be disabled in the XB8, but we'll have to wait to confirm.
His reasoning is that if you can't disable SIP ALG in XB7, it's unlikely XB8 will offer the capacity to disable SIP ALG either.

b) If you are also using your own separate router in addition to the one supplied by your ISP, then you should be enabling bridge mode instead in the modem/router combo, gateway, or hub issued by your ISP.
For Bell Hubs, visit http://forums.redflagdeals.com/please-s ... r-1993629/. For Bell and Virgin Hubs, I find it's often simpler to perform PPPoE login in your own router (this is PPPoE Passthrough) and disable Wi-Fi in the hub. You will need the PPPoE Username and Password from Bell or Virgin.

For Rogers, visit https://www.rogers.com/customer/support ... ridgemodem.
Shaw users will have to call Shaw to enable bridge mode at the time of this post.

For Telus Wi-Fi Hubs, put LAN port 1 on the Hub in bridge mode. Then connect your router to LAN port 1.
Alternatively, contact Telus and ask them how to enable bridge mode.

c) Afterwards, disable SIP ALG in your own separate router if you own one. Here is an example: https://www.obitalk.com/info/faq/sip-alg/disable-alg.

When using official Asus router firmware, SIP ALG is called SIP Passthrough (Navigate to Advanced Settings–>WAN–>NAT Passthrough). Disable SIP Passthrough.

In Asuswrt-Merlin, the ALG is "+NAT Helper". Just make sure SIP Passthrough in Merlin does not show "+NAT Helper". I use "Enabled" for SIP Passthrough in Asuswrt-Merlin without any problems.

2) the brand and model of your router and firmware version used,

a) Make sure whatever modem/router combo, gateway, or hub your ISP gave you is in bridge mode if (and only if) you are using your own separate router as well. Call/contact your ISP if you have to.
For Rogers, visit https://www.rogers.com/customer/support ... ridgemodem. Shaw users will have to call Shaw to enable bridge mode at the time of this post.

b) If you are also using your own separate router in addition to the one supplied by your ISP, then disable SIP ALG in your own router. Here is an example:
https://www.obitalk.com/info/faq/sip-alg/disable-alg.

3. Ensure your ATA is using the latest firmware version: https://software.cisco.com/download/hom ... .4.1%20SR5.

4. In your ATA, navigate to Voice-->Line (whichever you use for FPL)-->Supplementary Service Subscription-->Block CID Serv:
i) change to no
ii) Click "submit"

5. Login to your ATA. Specify a high random SIP port in your ATA between 30000 and 60000.
Navigate to Voice-->Line 1 (or whatever you're using for FPL)-->SIP settings, change SIP Port to a random number between 30000 and 60000.
Do not use the same random SIP port for any other Line. Always choose a different random local SIP port for each Line you're using.

Click "Submit" button if changes were made

Using a high random SIP port may help to bypass SIP ALG, and it also helps to avoid SIP Scanners (or hackers).
Also, changing local SIP port will reset a potential corrupted NAT association that developed between your router and ATA.

6. Navigate to Voice-->Line (whichever you use for FPL)-->NAT settings
a) NAT Mapping Enable should be yes
b) NAT Keep Alive Enable should be yes
c) NAT Keep Alive Msg should be $NOTIFY

d) click "Submit" button if changes were made

7. This step is unrelated to your problem. Regardless, in the ATA, navigate to Voice-->SIP-->NAT Support Parameters, and make sure that the following settings are enabled:

a)Handle VIA received-->yes
b)Handle VIA rport-->yes
c)Substitute VIA Addr-->yes
d) NAT Keep Alive Interval--> 20 seconds

e) click "Submit" button if changes were made

This helps to ensure the RTP audio stream is being sent to your WAN IP as opposed to your LAN IP.

8. This step is not related to your issue.
Navigate to Voice-->SIP-->SIP Timer Values (sec)
Reg Retry Intvl should be 120 seconds

Click "Submit" button if changes were made

Many older guides for FPL don't include this setting.

9. What proxy server is your ATA using (for example, voip.freephoneline.ca, voip2.freephoneline.ca, or voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060)?

Navigate to Voice-->Line (used for FPL)-->Proxy and Registration-->Proxy

If you're with Rogers and can't figure out how to disable SIP ALG, try voip4.freephoneline.ca:6060

If you made changes, submit settings.

10 . Proper device reboot order is always modem (wait for it to be fully up before turning on your)-->router (ensure Wi-Fi SSIDs are populated first on your devices)-->ATA (wait for router to be fully up and running before turning on ATA). That's always proper device reboot order. ATA should always be rebooted last in the device chain. Save settings, and reboot now.

11. When you login at https://www.freephoneline.ca/doGetCallLogs, select the month, and click "submit", are the failed incoming calls listed?
a) If so, what does the disconnect reason state?
b) Is the number in the "To" field what you expected? That is, are you just calling the same number you're calling from? Disable Follow Me while testing.

12.a. Visit viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2337&p=14070. Check (in ATA's User menu) to ensure your mobility number isn't blocked (being forwarded).

b. Check the telephone handset attached to your ATA to ensure your mobility number isn't blocked. Some handsets can block numbers.
For example, visit https://eng-ca.faq.panasonic.com/app/an ... ck-feature.

c. With respect to point b (above), if the phone handset attached to the ATA is set to block anonymous calls, and if your outbound caller ID from your mobility phone is set to anonymous or isn’t being shown, then the call will also drop to voicemail.

Blocked calls drop to FPL’s voicemail system.

13. A SIP ALG problem can also cause incoming calls to work with some carriers but not all. Refer to point B from viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20199#p78976.
Also viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20182#p78916 (SIP Passthrough is SIP ALG in Asus routers)
This is related to steps 1 and 2 from the first post.

14. FPL is limited to two channels (2 incoming calls; 2 outgoing; 1 incoming and 1 outgoing). With 2 active calls, incoming calls drop to voicemail.

15. Test with incoming calls. If the problem is gone, then don't bother with #16 and #17.

16. Who is the mobility carrier being used with your pixel 5 for the incoming call? ex. Rogers, Bell, Telus, Freedom?
i. are you using Wi-Fi calling? If so, is there any change when disabling Wi-Fi calling? Test with it enabled and then disabled.

17. Briefly (your ATA will not be protected by your ISP's device during this test) put your ISP's gateway, hub, or modem/router combo in bridge mode. Connect the ATA directly to your ISP's device (it should be acting strictly as modem). Try an incoming test call with your Pixel 5. If that works, you know the problem involves the router portion of the ISP's gateway or hub or with something on your LAN. Check for a router firmware update (and ensure SIP ALG remains disabled). Afterwards disable bridge mode if it wasn't enabled before you started this step.

For reference, your SPA112 setup guide is located at viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16206#p64088.

----
Generic info below (and likely doesn't apply to your problem)

Please note that only one registration per FPL account is allowed at any time. When there are multiple devices/softphones using the same account, only the most recent registration is valid. The previous device will lose
registration (despite what the ATA's registration status indicates, since 3600 seconds is a long time to update registration status), and incoming calls will not work on it. Registration is required for incoming calls but not for outgoing calls. This is especially important to consider if someone else is using your SIP credentials (username and password) that are found after logging in at https://www.freephoneline.ca/showSipSettings (or if you're trying to register your FPL account with a smartphone SIP app, with another device, or, in this case with an additional Line on your SPA112). Registration is required for incoming calls. This is also important to consider if you're using Freephoneline's desktop application (don't have it running while using your ATA with the same FPL account). Additionally, keep in mind that if someone else is also attempting to register the same SIP credentials on another device where you live, too many registration attempts can result in a temporary IP ban. If you ever see a SIP user agent that you don't recognize after logging in at the above link, someone else is using your credentials (possibly, you've been hacked in that scenario).

Is it possible that you have your freephonline rings simultanously to your cell phone ? It it is the case than it could be the culpit.

Which voicemail system? Your cellular mobility's voicemail system or FPL's?

If the incoming call is reaching the cellular mobility's voicemail system, then as noted in the first reply, disable Follow Me.
Disable Follow Me when testing for incoming call problems.

Yes, provided the incoming call to the FPL number is reaching the cellular service's voicemail system instead of FPL's, which would be easily verified by checking call logs (step 11 above)

"From" cellular number "To" the same cellular number

Checking call logs is also step 6 from viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20199&p=78975#p78975.
