"Change Affecting Your Service (IMPORTANT)" email

Postby Liptonbrisk » 05/17/2023

So, I'm sure most of us received an email from Fongo with that subject heading today.

In case you didn't, the email states the following:

"Ensure your devices are routing to voip.freephoneline.ca as we are making some changes behind the scenes on our end.

When?

We will begin making changes on Tuesday, May 23.

How?

Access your device’s web interface

Change the following settings (if not already set)

SIP Server:

voip.freephoneline.ca

SIP Proxy (If Applicable):

voip.freephoneline.ca

You can find your own specific SIP settings:

Log into http://www.freephoneline.ca → enter Settings → enter SIP Settings

Note:

Perform this change prior to when we will be making the switch."
---

What does this mean? It means if you've been using an IP address in your registration requests instead of using "voip.freephoneline.ca", you're going to have problems after May 22nd because server IP addresses are subject to change.
Use server names and not IP addresses for the ProxyServer (Obihai devices), Proxy (Linksys/Cisco ATAs), and (Primary) SIP Server (Grandstream) setting in your devices.

Does this mean I can't use voip4.freeephoneline.ca:6060 or voip2.freephoneline.ca? No. You can. This document isn't affected: https://support.freephoneline.ca/hc/en- ... redentials.

Change affecting freephone line service

Postby User2934 » 05/17/2023

I just got this in my email and as usual when Fongo took over Freephone line there is absolutely no explanation and no details.

Ensure your devices are routing to voip.freephoneline.ca as we are making some changes behind the scenes on our end.
When?
We will begin making changes on Tuesday, May 23.
How?
Access your device’s web interface
Change the following settings (if not already set)
SIP Server:
voip.freephoneline.ca
SIP Proxy (If Applicable):
voip.freephoneline.ca
You can find your own specific SIP settings:

Note:
Perform this change prior to when we will be making the switch.

Please could someone clarify this in details because I still use cable modem and I use voip4.freephoneline.ca 6060 as proxy address. This is necessary as stated in the instructions on freephone line website and I'm really confused now. Does this mean that those who use cable modems will no longer be able to use Freephoneline.ca??

No. Refer to the original post in this thread.

By the way, if you're able to disable SIP/ALG in the modem/router combo or gateway you were issued by your ISP, or have your own router in addition to the one issued by your ISP (put ISP's gateway in bridge mode if you're using your own router), then you should be able to use voip.freephoneline.ca and voip2.freephoneline.ca as well.

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20199
Refer to "examples for disabling SIP ALG in gateways" section.

You may also want to visit https://www.rogers.com/support/internet ... your-modem if you're using your own router.

Re: "Change Affecting Your Service (IMPORTANT)" email

Hi, could you please help me understand how their terminology (in the email) corresponds to the way things are named in my ATA?

Their email:
SIP Server = SIP Proxy = voip.freephoneline.ca

My device:
Registrar = voip4.freephoneline.ca
Proxy = voip.freephoneline.ca
Secondary proxy = voip2.freephoneline.ca

(note, I am not claiming that the values on the right side are correct/the best; these are leftovers from my attempt to solve a problem more than a year ago and might not be necessary, like the usage of voip4 + 6060 port might be unnecessary; my device is Thomson TG784)

Is "Registrar" = "SIP Server"?
Is "Proxy" = "SIP Proxy"?
In this case, what "Secondary proxy" corresponds to on their side?

Unfortunately, all I can find with respect to documentation of your device is at https://www.manualslib.com/manual/71068 ... ml?page=44. I've never used your device and am not familiar with it.

astanlofter wrote:Registrar = voip4.freephoneline.ca

For Freephoneline, only the Proxy should be required. Registration (sip signalling) takes place using the same server as the proxy server with FPL. In Obihai devices, specifying RegistrarServer is redundant and pointless when using Freephoneline. I would test with Registrar field blank.

Regardless, using two separate servers here is wrong. Either delete "Registrar" or make both fields exactly the same.
There is no separate registration server that needs to be specified when using Freephoneline.

With some SIP services a separate registration server may need to be specified in addition to a (different) proxy server. That's not the case with Freephoneline.

Secondary proxy = voip2.freephoneline.ca

I can't find anything in your device manual (after a quick search) that mentions what secondary proxy does in your ATA. If that's meant as a failover proxy in the event the Proxy server goes down, then you can leave that Secondary Proxy field as you have it. That would be beneficial.

Oddly, I found https://www.freephoneline.ca/pdf/Datasheet784.pdf at Freephoneline's website. :?: I have no clue why.
Anyway, the datasheet says "Support for Secondary Outbound Proxy"

If "Secondary proxy" is, instead, a separate, secondary, outbound proxy server field, then I would delete that field. There is no need to specify an outbound proxy with Freephoneline anyway. If the proxy server goes down, you're not going to understand why outbound calls still work but incoming ones don't (Registration is a requirement for incoming calls to work. If the proxy server is down, incoming calls won't work. If secondary proxy is a secondary outbound proxy only, outbound calls may work while incoming calls won't work when Proxy is down).

In either case, deleting "Secondary Proxy" will work.

Their email:

Proxy = voip.freephoneline.ca

For clarification SIP Server is the setting used in Grandstream ATAs. Proxy is the setting used in Linksys/Cisco ATAs. ProxyServer is the the setting used in Obihai ATAs.
Those terms are all the same thing.

So SIP Server = SIP Proxy = Proxy in your device

Thank you very much. You are the glue that holds this community together. There probably would be no FPL without you (or, to be exact, you would be the only customer of this service).

SIP server setting for voip.freephoneline.ca

Postby amc8 » 05/17/2023

I received an email advising me to ensure that my SIP server is set to voip.freephoneline.ca, before May 23rd. However when I log into my account and look under settings, I don't see "SIP server" anywhere. Is this a problem, or does it mean that this issue is irrelevant for me?

The SIP proxy (which I was also advised to check on) is already set to voip.freephoneline.ca

Thanks in advance!

1. Please click viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20549 and read.

2. You don't login to your FPL online account to see what SIP server you're using.

You log into your OBi202.

a. Visit https://www.obitalk.com/info/faq/OBi202 ... b-from-WAN. Enable AccessFromWAN if it's not.

b. Dial ***1. Enter the IP address you hear into a web browser. Login. Default username and password are “admin” without the quotation marks.

c. Navigate to Service Providers-->ITSP Profile used for FPL-->SIP-->ProxyServer

3. Read the very first post at the top of this thread, please.

Is this a problem, or does it mean that this issue is irrelevant for me?

It doesn't mean the issue is irrelevant.

Don't use IP addresses to register with Freephoneline. Use domain name servers instead.

In other words, don't use "208.65.240.44" instead of "voip.freephoneline.ca" for the ProxyServer setting in your OBi202 because that IP address is subject to change (apparently soon).

Thank you so much for your help!

I enabled AccessFromWAN.

I have an ITSP profile that already has "obihai.sip.google.com" for ProxyServer, and a second ITSP profile that already has "voip.freephoneline.ca" for ProxyServer. No IP addresses in those rows. That's how it should be?

That's Google Voice, which is not supported on these forums. We only support Fongo services here.

That's Freephoneline.

Good.

With respect to the email you received, yes.

For your reference, the PDF configuration guide you should be using is located at the bottom of the first post at viewtopic.php?f=15&t=18805. You can also double check settings related to incoming calls at viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20534.
