Can't hear caller on FPL outgoing calls

Post by skyskysky »

Hi guys,

I signed up last night and I have a problem. If I make outgoing calls, I can not hear the other caller, but they can hear me i.e. outgoing audio is broken. For incoming calls to FPL, both callers hear each other so the incoming/outgoing audio works fine.

I tied several SIP clients:
- snom m9 hardware phone
- Bria softphone for Android (with STUN support)
- freephoneline.ca softphone for Windows

I also tried 2 networks - Bell DSL and Bell LTE.

I always have the same problem, can't hear the other person on outgoing calls.

I have 2 other phone line with VoIP.ms and Anveo and those works perfect using default settings, so I'm not sure why this won't work.

Any ideas what could be wrong? I paid $50 to unlock my FPL. Can I get a new number to check if there was something wrong with the one that was issued to me? I believe I have exhausted all the troubleshooting options on my end...

1) there a way to reset the SIP password?
2) if the answer above is yes, is anyone willing to try my credentials from your setup?

thanks

It appears that you have not forwarded ports from your router to the device(s) that you are using.

I can't forward ports on my carrier's mobile network. And my home router has an auto SIP helper enabled, it's supposed to work without manual forwarding. Like I was saying, other 2 providers work perfectly fine.

What's fongo doing that's different?

Is FPL's RTP known to randomly break on outgoing calls?

Some providers run devices to help with NAT traversal but many do not.
I have not come across your router before but it appears to have a version of SIPalg often also known as SIP helper.
The SIP helper might be what is causing the problem. Try turning it off

On Android the best SIP clients that I have found are Linphone and CSipSimple but others work OK. I also use voip.ms and it does work without problems while the other carrier that I use gave exactly the problems that you are seeing unless I ran STUN but I think they have recently upgraded and I no longer need STUN. Did you actually run STUN on Bria when you tried it?

Using the exact same connection and settings with my snom m9 hardware phone

Line 1 voip.ms number calling Bell Mobility number = two-way audio works all the time
Line 2 anveo number calling Bell Mobility number = two-way audio works all the time
Line 3 fongo/fpl number calling Bell Mobility number = one-way audio most the time, two-way audio works rarely

On Android Bria yes I with/without STUN and all variations of NAT strategy. Two-way audio rarely works.

I disabled the SIP helper on my router.. going to test again

I think this was it. I disabled the SIP helper on my router. Now calls to/from my snom m9 hardware phone appear to be working.

Then the only way I seem to hold a connection via LTE in Bria for Android is with these settings:
1) Settings > Advanced Settings > NAT Strategy - Current Strategy > User Specified > STUN Wi-Fi OFF, STUN Mobile OFF, ICE Wi-FI OFF, ICE Mobile ON, DNS SRV ON, STUN Server stun.counterpath.com (if I use STUN instead of ICE the server randomly disconnect from Bria)
2) Settings > Accounts > fongo.com > Account Advanced > Network Traversal - Global IP Wi-Fi OFF, Global IP Mobile OFF

Again it appears to be working, going to try it for a few days to confirm.

So fongo must not be running the special boxes that help with NAT traversal?

Yes, with XLite (free version - from Counterpath) I use ICE on my old MS Windows laptop so I suppose that would be normal. I have never used Bria but your settings look OK to me.

I think Fongo do some things to help with NAT traversal but perhaps they could do more.

The SIPalg (SIP helper) problem keeps on giving problems but the blame there is firmly on the router designers rather than Fongo!

Now enjoy your phone :D

Still doesn't work with COUNTERPATH BRIA app on iPhone.

Partial resolution here for exactly the same issue on GROUNDWIRE.... but no solution yet for BRIA..
