New softphone! Beta release

Post by FONGO_steve »

A beta release of our upcoming softphone has been released earlier today.

We invite all of our users to download it and check it out!

http://www.freephoneline.ca/downloadRegister#apple

Please note: As we say, this is a Beta release. If bugs are found, please use the feedback option in the softphone to report them. As such, beta software may be subject to bugs and should not be used if writing any reviews or editorials about the company. If you are requesting assistance on the board with the softphone, please mention if you are running the beta or not!

Make sure you use the download link in the green bar on the downloads page
they didn't make this very clear - I've already sent off the request to get that cleaned up a little

I think the following information should be added to the FPL web page where the downloads are because I am a brand new FPL user and have just spent 3 hours trying to work out what my problems are. I have now figured it out, but I think the following information is vital for new users.

If you do not have a softphone installed, make sure that you download the stable version of the softphone and then upgrade to the Beta version if you want to. I initially just downloaded the Beta version and it would not connect to the server, no matter what I did. I checked and re-checked that the ports were opened on my router, rebooted etc, removed, re-installed and I even made a couple of phone calls, but all to no avail. I then removed the Beta installation and found that there is a stable version available for download. I downloaded and installed that and lo and behold I had a connection. I made a call and it worked fine. I then downloaded and installed the Beta version and it updated the previous version and now the Beta version works too.

So, don't just get the Beta version first if you don't have the stable version because it might not work straight off.

were the ports also open in your firewall too?

I had done a fresh installation of the beta on my work system after fully removing the old one and didn't have any issues. I'll bring this up with the programmers though - this may be a bug that needs to be addressed!

Yes Steve, the ports were open in my firewall also. I tried calling your tech support people about this, but the woman told me to call my ISP, she was no help at all I'm afraid and I managed to figure it out myself in the end.

Alright, good to know. I'll bring this up with the programmers to examine a few things. Thx for the report.

When it comes to port forwarding, we won't provide hands on support for any routers we don't sell (being a free service, this is generally understood. We aim to be a step above most other free services, which barely provide support at all - if any!). ISP wouldn't block the ports though - I will bring this up with the newer members of the support as I think I know who's responsible ;)

I downloaded the Mac version of the Beta Softphone.

I can make calls in and out (phones ring) but not audio or voice are going through? Settings has no audio configuration option? Am I missing something?

We have heard this bug from some mac users - is all your router port forwarding done?
Can you use the feedback option in the softphone to send this same report? That feedback option will notify the programmers, and also send a large amount of program logs with it for them to analyze.

Just tried out the beta, would it be possible to remove the advertising for users that have bought a config file?

Unfortunately this won't be an option as we still have lots of costs to cover even after the purchase of a config file. The ad's that are on the software phone help pay for the majority of those, and help keep the service costs down to the 0$ you pay monthly now!

I've been using the Mac Beta 1.1 Softphone for a the last 10 days, along with a Logitech ClearChat PC Wireless Headset and the quality of the calls are awesome!

If you're looking for ways to improve it - a "Redial" button would be a great addition!

Thanks for bringing this to us!

It's a little hidden, but if you right click in the box where the number you are dialing is, you'll get a dropdown of the most recent numbers you've called.

A button would be much easier - I will pass this along :)

What model of router do you have? Just out of curiosity.

One other thing that could be useful - when I launch the Softphone, it asks me which IP address to use (I believe this is due to having Parallels installed, which creates two "virtual" Ethernet adapters).

It would be nice to be able to set this once, rather than having to select it each time, (maybe adding a "Remember This Selection" box).

I continue to use the Beta and have had NO troubles with it - no crashing, no force quits required, no sound issues. :D If you ever want more feedback just ask!

Thanks again!

The issue with a 'Remember IP Selection' or what have you, option, is that private IP addresses are usually dynamic and will constantly change (in theory ;)) so if you remember say, 192.168.1.121 and you reboot your router, or the DHCP lease expires, you will keep trying to connect to an IP address that doesn't exist!

But yes! Any feedback on possible errors or suggestions are most welcome.

True, but you can bind the connection to the NIC, rather than the IP directly, so binding to the nic, grabs the ip, and away you go. This way you don't have to worry if you're dhcp'd. And virtual nic's carry a virtual handle, so this would resolve the issue at hand and allow your software developers to add a "remember this" option. (Download and install NetMeter (freeware) as an example.)

Not sure if you're programmers would be able to do that - but if they wanted to make that option of remembering - that's how they can do it.
