My home number and my ID have been stolen

Postby pasariija » 07/19/2020

A service provider I contacted from my home phone has me informed me that someone was my number and name to accuse him of owing me $1000 and to pay that immediately.
So, not only that my home phone number and my name were stolen, but also the callers list and who knows what else. There is no information about data bridge on your site. Is it possible that that could have happened? Please advise ASAP. Thanks.

Some VoIP service providers allow its users to spoof or fake any outbound phone number and Caller ID name they want, easily. Scam calls from spoofed numbers are common.

You might want to check your current and former email address(es) at https://haveibeenpwned.com/.

Many smartphone apps collect users’ information as well, including Truecaller, which I hate: https://www.truecaller.com/name-search. If someone with your contact information uses Truecaller, Truecaller has your contact information as well. Truecaller isn’t the only app that functions in that manner.

There’s plenty of sources for names, numbers, and addresses.

Thanks. I was under impression that before September 2020 all providers have to use additional security structure to protect data bridges and especcially spooking phone numbers and names. I still need to find our what can I do besides reporting it to Anti-Fraud agency.

VoIP is used worldwide. Rules in one country do not necessarily extend to all other countries. And even if all countries followed the same rules, some providers may risk breaking them without worrying too much.

People in Canada are still receiving scam calls from spoofed numbers. Often the scammers aren’t calling from Canada.

Is it possible that that could have happened?

In answer to your question, if banks can be hacked, it's likely that any online service has the potential to be hacked (some are more difficult than others), but I haven't heard anything about Fongo. So I doubt that's the source of your problem.

I don't disagree that the phone was spooked. I wish I was more aware of that is happening via internet phone providers. The issues is that my phone and name are used to ask people for money and they have also taken entire caller list. The call was from Canada to Canadian business number that I previously dialed. I wish someone from Fongo would answer about the measures they are taking in Canada.

If scammers can fake any outbound phone number they want, how can you be sure the call was from Canada?

All I need is your name and phone number. If you've posted anywhere online, I may be able to associate your name and number with other details. Then I can pretend to be you and ask someone you have done business with before to send money to me. It's not that hard. People fall for scams from fake phone numbers all the time: https://www.vicnews.com/news/victoria-w ... ne-number/.

Anyway, if Fongo had been hacked, I would expect to be be getting tons of scam calls or complaints. I'm not.
