Off-topic --- Unless Big Smoke took over AB. There's a separate thread where I have posted some 2-1-1 and 5-1-1 info also, some of which is relevant for AB. So a quick forum search for the relevant info, and if there is something more that you need, post it there in the proper thread! Thanks! :)

So, if you know you are off topic, then why the hell do you keep at it?

Anyways, I have no mod-powers so I can't move things.

You should really consider "searching" the threads before you post questions ... I mean honestly. There is a ton of discussion surrounding 310-numbers.
Risking getting myself in crap, i will summarize it quickly -- but please, honest to god, please try to stay on topic, and do a quickie search for stuff that interests you rather than just randomly posting away ...

They are not officially supported in any way shape or form.
Several reasons for this -- 310 numbers by their very nature are geographic. You are routed usually to the nearest "whatever" type of call centre that you are reaching. They act very much like 800 numbers in that way. As an example, if you are calling like say Dominos or whatever, and call via their 310 number, based on where you are, you are routed supposedly to the nearest one. This works fine with wireline (home/wired) phones as the system KNOWS where you are. For cell phones/wireless, somewhat less so, but based on which "tower" or cell site you are bounced off of, a reasonable effort can be made.

HOWEVER, with IP-telephony, this does not work in any way shape or form, as you can be calling from virtually anywhere. If you read into the 211/311 threads, you will know that Steve has confirmed that calls are routed based on where your FPL number is based out of ... so if I have a TORONTO number but I am in Vancouver, if I dial 311 I will reach Toronto City Hall ... probably not what I was after!

However, as I am using VOIP, I can jump on to GOOGLE or whatever, and easily find the "real" 10D number for Vancouver City Hall, if that is what I am after.

We can go thru and post all the translations we want, and that may make it easier in the long run, but at the end of the day, we are all responsible for taking care of ourselves and figuring it out on our own ... ;)

Hope this helps, and please get the heck back on topic!

I am locking this thread, as TheHardy indicated it's digressed off topic. His explanations of how 310 numbers work, etc.. are enough for any user seeking this information to get what they need out of it
