Hide Caller ID (*67) not working

Post by mh1983 »

Hi,

https://support.fongo.com/hc/en-us/arti ... -Caller-ID suggests that I can use *67 as a prefix to hide my caller ID for the specific call I'm making.

I tried it out on a few numbers and I kept getting the message "This call is not covered by your tariff plan", even though those numbers work just fine otherwise.

Any suggestions? Does it only work for Fongo Home Phone and not FPL?

There's two methods for blocking outbound caller ID.

The first is via the ATA or IP Phone. If the ATA, an Obihai for example, recognizes the *67 star code, the ATA will set an outbound ID flag as anonymous. I'm not sure whether your Grandstream ATA can do that (I lean towards no). However, the incoming call carrier must recognize that the "anonymous" flag is being sent and honour or recognize the request to display the incoming caller ID as anonymous. Not all carriers do. Also the ATA's dial plan needs to permit the use of *67 (Obihai already the star code is already set in the ATA). Using this method (at the device level), if I call a Telus cell number using *67, the caller ID will show "anonymous." However, if I call Fongo Mobile, information still appears.

The better option is to have your telephone service provider allow *67 to block outbound caller ID at the provider level, which is what you're trying to do. Again, the ATA's dial plan needs to allow *67. In the past, Freephoneline didn't allow anonymous outbound calls in order to curb potential abuse (originally, it was allowed, but then they changed their policy). I suspect that's still the case. As for why Fongo Home Phone users are allowed while FPL users aren't, I have no clue. Beyond this, I can't say anything further.

Thanks for your reply. I opened a case w/ Fongo support, they made a minor adjustment on my account, and now the hide caller ID function is working properly.
