Calling with an SIP number

Post by XAnthonyX »

I'm new to having an SIP number and a VOIP number so I have three main questions.

When someone in Canada dials my SIP number (without a 1) are they charged for long distance?
Will someone in Canada ever have to use a 1 to dial my number (I am in Markham Ont)
When someone receives a call from my SIP or VOIP number, are they charged long distance?

Before I was using Haywire, an "free" text messaging app and I was startled to find out that when I was sending text messages to my friends, if they replied back, they were charged with an international text messaging rate!! Scary stuff.

Thanks,
Anthony

To them, this is just another regular telephone number. If your FreePhoneLine number is in Markham Ontario, then anyone trying to call that number will have to add "1" if it's a long distance to them, with respect to whatever telephony system they use. If they use POTS (Plain Old Telephone System), then someone from Alberta would have to dial 1 and pay long distance charges.

Another FreePhoneLine customer, however, would most probably not pay for long distance because FreePhoneLine brings that Alberta caller's voice over the internet up to somewhere in Ontario that isn't long distance with your Markham number.

If they have a regular phone or cellphones, yes they need to dial 1 and pay long distance charges. If they use an internet based voice provider, such as FPL or Google or Vonage or a dozen others, then probably not. It depends on each company's particular network capabilities.

Ah, tricky question. If they have POTS, then no. Regular phone services don't incur charges on incoming long distance. For cellphones however, it's a different story. The receiving party may have to pay long distance charges if they're currently roaming out of their local area. For example, if I bring my montreal-based cellphone (514.xxx-xxxx) to Alberta and someone from Alberta calls me, I pay long distance. If someone form Montreal calls me while i'm in Alberta, I also pay long distance charges. Funny stuff.

I don't know about SMS so I can't answer to that portion of your post.

In regards to SMS, Haywire is just like any other third party client such as LiveProfile, WhatsApp, Kik etc... so I'm not sure where it pertains to our services...

Would you be able to clarify?
