Interesting voicemail...

Post by laurent »

I just got this voicemail, which I found funny and interesting, so I'm sharing.

"Press 1 to continue, or press 9 to be removed from this list. .............. goodbye! And thank you for calling."

Uh, yeah, you called me :)

Well consider this. This spring, there had been a total of 300 000 complaints from people who received telemarketing calls even though they are in the list.

Out of those, the CRTC collected 250$ in fines. That's in dollars, not "thousands".

Maybe I am an exception but my calls dropper by 98% since registering my number. Makes supper time much more enjoyable. I got on early - since the first day. I expect that may explain why.

The call you got doesn't sound like telemarketing. Most likely a glitch in the system.

I found other people reporting being called by that number and having followed the prompts. Turns out it is telemarketing :/

But yeah you're right in that sense; the registry did help reduce the volume of calls I received. Bell still calls though, using some obscure law to justify they can call me even though I'm on the list.

I have 2 internal extensions to deal with telemarketers:

1. A nice voice synthesized warning that tells the telemarketer not to call again. Call has been logged ;)
2. A not so nice warning... (Only used for telemarketers not based in Canada)

Guess which one I choose the most often?

Yes, option 2 always comes into play.

That's the power of FreeSwitch (or asterisk if it does even support this).

I'll assume they're not all like that, but a friend of mine used to work for a telemarketer (in his dark period I guess), and anything a callee would do as a retaliation would ensure a top place in a special list they had that guaranteed twice as many calls, earlier in the morning and/or later at night :/

That would constitute as harassment under Canadian law. They would be effectively shooting themselves in the foot anyways.

of course it's harassment! They got busted for much worse than that actually... but that's another story :)
