Strange Ring

Post by pitcritter »

Got my account setup pretty easily. It seems to be working fine. There is one slightly strange thing though. My phone doesn't ring normally. It does ring, but it makes a strange chirping sound instead of what I'm used to.

As per instructions on the forum, I've set up as follows:

Under “Ring and Call Waiting Tone Spec” category:
Ring Waveform: Sinusoid
Ring Frequency: 52
Ring Voltage: 90

The phone is a Uniden DECT 6 cordless, that's always worked perfectly with Vonage. It's really strange because the handset should generate it's own ring, or so I thought.

I did buy my PAP2 from eBay. It came from Asia, so it might have been provisioned for another country.

Ideas?

Drop the frequency down to 20Hz.

The ring signal is how your phone company (or ATA) signals to the telephone equipment to ring. It's built this way because in the old days, the ring signal was actually making a hammer hit a bell in the telephone. 20Hz was chosen as the best frequency for our bells here, other countries made other choices.

Now that it's all electronic, the telephone software detects a given pattern as a ring, and then proceeds to generate its own sound for ringing. Since it's software based, the parameters at which the programmer that day felt a ring was valid is not always known, and sometimes we have to play a little with the patterns to satisfy the phone.

Bingo!

20hz was the key. Thanks Laurent.
