Re: Fax Question

The Brother 8890DW multi-function centre has an option in its "fax" menu (under sub-menus "0. miscellaneous" and "1. Compatibility") to adjust the equalization or transmission speed to account for telephone line interference. "Compatibility" can be set either to "high" (default), "normal" or "basic (for VOIP)". In the "basic" mode, the fax modem baud rate is set to 9600 bps and error correction mode (ECM) is turned off. In "normal" mode, modem speed is 14400 bps. In "high" mode, modem speed is 33600 bps. I had some difficulties in the default "high" mode, so I switched to "basic (for VOIP)" and it seems to work. It's nice that Brother expressly contemplated VoIP in providing such a "basic" mode in this machine.

I also note that the same Brother machine has an "Overseas" mode (under sub-menu "22. Setup send"), which is a TEMPORARY setting for sending just one fax over a very noisy telephone line, after which the setting resets to normal. I haven't tried this but I probably don't need to given that the "basic" compatibility mode works.

Just tried WINFax pro with FPL. Worked OK. Sending and receiving both way. Thanks, FPL
